Why is gravedigging bad?

The mods don't seem to like it when someone brings a long-dead thread back to life. I've never understood why. If nobody really has any interest in it won't it just die again immediately? What's wrong with gravedigging?

I have a feeling it has something to do with all the old “baggage” in the thread of people who are not around anymore

But their old posts generate a whole bunch of replys that will never be addressed (at least by the original poster)

While I understand some good conversation can still persist on the topics brought up it cuts some of the “clutter” people now have to read through to understand where the thread is .

First of all, I am dissapointed by the lack of corpse/tomb desecration involved in this thread.
Second, I think that Upward was *shudders* right. You can have people responding to posters that have been since either banned or have moved on. Even if the person is still on the boards, they might not be able to simply slide back into the old argument. Thats like someone quizzing me on Spanish Grammar, yes, I took a couple semesters of Spanish in High School, but that was years ago and the knowledge has gotten dusty from disuse.

Funny, never heard it called "gravedigging" before. On another forum, I coined the term "necromancy" for this -- bringing back a dead thread, with the resulting resurrected thread being dubbed a "zombie." :D

It's bad because it's old news. If you want to create a new thread on an old topic that is fine. However bringing a thread back from 6 months ago is silly. Some of the people may not even be around to back up what they said if you question it. Thus making it unfair and why would you want to bring up old news anyway?

Well some things are not “old news”
At least not in the short time we are dealing with

Yeah a current event topic

But for some reason arguments based on gender or religion or sexuality never get fazed really into “old news” category (at least in the timeframe we are dealing with)

Threads die for a reason, no one is interested in that argument anymore, not the scope, but that one threads argument. It's better to keep the forum fresh, with new people and ideas as the forum is not static. I agree with the mods on this. I don't like people bringing back really old threads either. That is not to say you can't link to it. Which of course would be the compromise.

What I hate is after Stephistan and I beat the crap out of each other (WL here), and we forget about it, someone brings the thread back from the dead, and then we have to say it all over again.

Then you try at being nice, cuddly, and nonconfrontational like me!
You can search through my posts, and will find that I have never been insulting or rude to anyone. Well, maybe to blacks, gays, whites, Indians, American Indians, Communists, Christians, Republicans, the Green Party, USians, Frenchmen, Canadians, Mexico, Texans, Democrats, the physically disabled, the mentally disabled, women, abortion advocates, Pro-Lifers, Jews, Nazis, and Liv Tylerr, but they don't count do they?

Well, I'm all for being nice to Liv Tyler. If it gets me closer to getting her with her legs in the air, I'll be doing it.

No, you're not. Anyone who tokes and beats seals is OK in my book. And you're always a pal with a reacharound.

Cluich, I am a believer in personal freedom. I vote Republican because they generally (at least historically) have been better about this than Democrats.

At least more consistent, except where abortion comes in.

To me, Dobbs may be "different" but that's what makes him a good person - he's not willing to bend himself to fit the mold - he wants to live his life his way.

There are not enough people like that in the world. Too many sheeple who want to vote for the candidate who says, "I am the government, and I am here to help you - with your life, your thoughts, and remove all personal responsibility from your existence."

Very colourful, SA. Except I'm usually the one getting boned... the tackle I sport is mostly just for giggles these days. But I look great in a slinky dress, much to the delight of my mambo partners.

Lucky them. And me.

I don't even bother. Think of the competition I have to go against to be the biggest pain in the ass in the US. The competition is fierce even at the local level.

Oh, come on. Have you seen our last few Presidents. If one's ass can get more sore after that gigantic reaming then I don't know what to say. That's just Presidents. What about Geraldo Rivera, Dr. Laura Schlesinger (or however you spell it) and Britney Spears? Who can hang with a guy who asks atheist why they don't 'try religion'? You know that guy has to be from the US. We may not lead the world in electronics, math or reading comprehension, but dammit, what country can hang with our pain-in-the-assitude? It's our primary export.

Disclaimer - Ok, Britney Spears is only a pain in the ears but her initials are BS so that has to count for something.
