Recent studies done by DR. ROBERT J . MELAMEDE (http://www.uccs.edu/~biology/faculty/melamede.htm) suggests that while Marijuana certainly isn't the healthiest of things, it isn't the green monster that the U.S. government would have you believe.

Cells in the lungs and respiratory passages are lined with nicotine receptors but these cells don't appear to have THC receptors. This may explain why smoking marijuana has so far not been linked with lung cancer, a major cause of death from cigarette smoking.


Research has also shown that marijuana kills cancer cells and reduces tumor growth. This is, in part, because marijuana reduces the formation of blood vessels that nourish tumors.
You all better watch out, they will be banning Aspirin next, due to its evil ability to stop headaches!

As far as I am concerned Marijuana is, cancer wise, no worse then tobaco products. If is proven to be less unhealthy that just makes an even greater case for some sort of legalization.

"they" have been saying for some time now that there are as many as six times the number of carcinogens in cannabis compared to tobacco - or that the carcinogens present were six times more potent or something like that anyway.
but then conversely, another "they" were saying that marijuana smoke actually has anti-carcinogens in it that reduces that risk down to almost nothing - i guess this new info supports that idea. w00t :)

they did a test, i seem to remember, comparing the number of smoking patients that got cancer over a period of time. the ones at lowest risk, obviously, were the ones who didn't smoke at all. next least in risk were the just-cannabis smokers, then the cannabis-and-tobacco smokers (not just in the same joint, but they smoke both Js and fags), and lastly, most at risk of actually developing a cancer, the tobacco-only smokers. wish i still had a source for that :(

The usual claim is that marijuana smoke contains about five times as much tar as cigarette smoke, and is therefore that much more likely to cause cancer.

This was never of significant concern to anyone who actually smokes pot, however, because we know that the average cigarette smoker probably takes at least twenty times the total hits as a pothead.

(That is, cigarette smokers are constantly lighting up, while even relatively heavy pot smokers only take a few hits a few times a day. Most of us smoke far less often than that.)

Nevertheless, it is interesting (and heartening) to know that new research might dispel the idea all together.

Heh, you guys are preaching to the choir. While I don't use it all that much myself (as in hardly ever, except maybe when sex requires relaxation I need "help" to attain), I'm not opposed at all.

Like tobacco, marijuana contains many chemicals that can hurt the lungs and cause cancer. One marijuana cigarette can cause more damage to the lungs than many tobacco cigarettes because marijuana has more tar in it and is usually smoked without filters.

I really cannot see any rational reason for the prohibition of cannabis but not tobacco, alchohol, and even fatty foods. Even if you have some massive hatred of 'filthy hippies' that smoke pot, surely people can see the benefits to the economy of legalising and taxing it?

After all...it was all about not lettin' those damned Mexican migrant workers have their little happy hour. OF course, that didn't work because then other people started using it and so, they had to twist the truth, even though at the time scientists said it was one of the few durgs they ought not outlaw. Yes, this was back in the 30s...
