Here we go again--Wilma is a Cat 5 storm

Gaze upon me and fear. (ttp://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-wilma,0,1180061.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines)

The expectation is that she'll weaken before she hits the southwestern coast of Florida, but could still be a Cat 3/4, and considering that south Florida is a peninsula without any major geographical obstacles that would weaken her tremendously, it's possible that those of us on the eastern side could still get gale force winds and tons of rain.

No truly astonishing satellite photos yet, but I'll post some as soon as I find them. Time to buckle down again. Sometimes I really miss San Francisco. :)

What's amazing is that Wilma strengthened literally overnight, and is now the strongest storm on record in the Atlantic basin. If I'm not mistaken, it's also the first time we've had a Category 5 storm this late in the season.

The projected path is worrying. If the eye goes over the Florida Keys (which it very well could), there won't be much left of the Keys. Or it could hit Tampa Bay.

I'm suddenly glad I didn't accept that job offer in Fort Lauderdale a few years back.

What's amazing to me is that the August issue of National Geographic presented informaton that said, in essence, "Sell out and Move out, 'cause the next 10 years or so of storms are gonna suck hard."

They showed the cycles, showed the likely entry points, and did everything but paint "PANIC NOW" on the cover.

And yet these storms are suprising... Oops, there goes New Orleans again...

Ah thats why i love living in southern Illinois..No hurricanes. A slight chance of a earthquake(new madrid fault) and sometimes there are bad thunderstorms...some with tornadoes...But luckily, knock on wood, my town,Mt vernon, has not seen a tornado well since before i was born..So ha..take that....( i can see the headines now...Mt vernon entirely destroyed after an f5 tornado hit at the same time as an earthquake)

Well if this one continues on course, you won't get squat. It'll cross the Florida peninsula and head out into the Atlantic.

I'm in Fort Lauderdale and work in Boca, so I'm not exactly ground zero--no storm surge from the east and the winds and rain will slow some before it gets here, but all that means is that if it's a strong 3 when it makes landfall, it'll be a weak 3 or strong 2 when it gets to me. Nothing terrible, especially if it moves fast like it is right now, but then again Katrina was a Cat 1 when it came across south Florida and it did plenty of damage--it was a slow mover.
Mesatecala
19-10-2005, 18:41
Ya Nazz is right, you actually want this storm to accelerate when it nears Florida. Remember in the past, tropical storms have sometimes done a lot more damage then hurricanes.. that's because they were moving so slowly and dumping a lot more rain on the area effected.

Ah well, maybe after the tenth, the US will learn to inhabit regions not prone to hurricanes, not to increase both their occurances and strength through atmospheric pollution and global warming.

Wilma may not be the monster storm Katrina was, or at least I hope it isn't. It's heading into cooler waters as we speak, and some models show it spinning itself out where it is now. However, the scariest part of the storm is that we know more will come. A storm that strong means that there is plenty of hurricane fuel to go around. Are you prepared for TS Alpha?

And yet every single one of those indicators come with the caveat that this storm has already defied prediction and will most likely do so.

Your right we don't. However, Category 5 storms lose strength rapidly. In fact this Hurricane has already dropped 15 mph from 175 to 160. It'll probably be a bit lower tomorrow.

Hurricanes usually don't change from Tropical Storms to Cat 5's in 24 hours either.

In the face of that, you HAVE to expect the worst and pray for the best.

In this case, I won't be expecting the worse since it is a known fact that Category 5 hurricanes don't last for more than 48 hours.

Now it is a minimal Category 5 Hurricane with winds down to 155mph. Pressure is also up to 894 and still moving wnw at 8mph.

Eh, it was just a jab. I'm worried about the poor Cubans myself. It's still a Cat 5 and it's passing right on over. That does seem odd that that darn hurricane would just start raging like a madman. I could understand why it would burn itself out. Still though, wait and see. If it can only last 48 hours, it still may have time to smack the US.

How about the number of people dead? 15 in Cuba is my guess. I would anticipate it to be a 4 by sun up, no betting against that.

So how about a cookie for how many people in Cuba die? 15, once again is my guess.

Do you work at Florida Atlantic? I got an offer from them about 10 years back and I just couldn't figure out how to afford a house around there.

Good luck with the storm. I'm still trying to dig out from Charley. Haven't been able to get the tiles back on the roof, but I guess that doesn't matter now.

We bought the condo as a fixer-upper. It isn't beachfront, either. We have to walk three blocks. Just got the roof back on from Charley, though. My insurance company is going to hate me on Monday.

Good luck with the weather.

Yes, we already noticed you're not a redneck (unless you're deliberately fooling us with your posts).

I'll have to come down there and check to see if you have a defunct pickup truck up on blocks in your front yard, the refrigerator out on the back porch, an old couch on the front porch (where sits your toothless, slope-headed, beady-eyed, inbred, mouth-breathing relatives), and under the porch, a pack of mangy dogs.

Of course, if none of that is there, you couldn't possibly be a redneck ;) :)
Teh_pantless_hero

All the mangy dogs live in in raggedy pins. The 3-legged beagle that lives inside is the one under the porch.
