So I got home today and there were fifteen pop-ups on my desktop. I had only been gone an hour and a half! I say we criminalize pop-up advertisements and brutally execute the people who make them. In the mean time, can somebody suggest an effective, free pop-up blocker?

I find that setting fire to your computer and running around the house on all fours generally works as a solution, but then you are probably looking for a cheaper solution. So I would recommend merely setting fire to the monitor.

Doesn't Internet Explorer do that by itself, sometimes to the point that you want to beat it to death because it's blocking windows that you're trying to open?

Also, I must say that I've never had pop-ups come into existence while I was no longer on the computer... what in the world did you leave open? It must be a sign of the Pop-upocalypse!

Google Toolbar works for me with IE. [ on the rare occasion I use it.. ] Firefox has very little popups[or so I've found].

a nice firewall would help too..... and spyblaster, which prevents pop-ups from getting on your computer in the first place.

Seriously, no pop-up blocker will save you. Nothing will. What you need is probably to rise gently from your chair and acting normally. Then move towards the wall where the power cord to the computer is, gently.. don't scare it. It can be dangerous for you. Now... Snatch out as fast as you can and yank that cable out!! Hurry now!! No time to waste, find something suitable to bash the hardrive in. Anything will do, a golfclub, a gun, something that either says "BANG" aloud and shoots some kind of hard missile that can shatter plastic and electrical components, or something hard that can smash your comp to pieces. Go for a baseball bat if you are american.

(Remember, the SCREEN is not the computer. Its just something you can see the lovly girls on on those X-rated websites... So aim on the right thing)

Takes no deduction, but a computer that can surf on the web totally by itself while you are not at home is an intelligent thingy (yes, I know, computers is assumed to be 'intelligent' wait for the next part)... that can think by itself. A sentinent being or whats its called. Dangerous in our time of age.

Now, discussions about you being a murderer for slaying a being who is 'aware' we can have later. But for now.. follow the steps above.

you stop surfing porn and warez sites
AND you get a decent firewall

I use Firefox - but the necessary add on is Adblock and the Adblock G Updater.

I get NO popups - ever.

Get firefox. Its fast, and has a built-in pop-up blocker.

Maybe you forgot to turn on the pop-up blocker.

No additional adblock stuff - I do not have Flash et. al. installed. Java disabled. I have ZERO problems; but, this is an unacceptable setup for some people.

I have seen & used Firefox with Adblocker. Thumbs up, works quite well.

None of this may matter if you are already "owned" by some scumware. Ripping this stuff out may require the assitance of a real computer professional. You will get *lots* of advice on adware removal programs. Give them a shot. Just don't end up spending all you time & pulling your hair out if they do not work - talk to a pro.

The adds you are having troubles with probably won't be blocked by a pop-up blocker. The ads are saved somewere on your harddrive; You are going to need to get an ad-ware remover. Finding the ads on your harddrive and pressing delete will not work as most ads are able to re-create themselves when deleted. Using a different browser (ie Firefox) will help stop ads from getting onto your harddrive in the firstplace.

Be carefull using ad-ware removers, they can delete files nessisary for some programs that you want.

I also uses the Lynx browser via command prompt. Does a good job with the NS site.

And I think this just goes to show how information rich NS and related forums are - ie. if you ever wonder what people mean when they say "it's the page content that counts."

Lol yup there is both lynx and links ... very simmilar ... links has ssl and mouse capability (even over ssh) so you can "click" on links even if you were ssh'ed in like me

Yeah I have had all kinds of issues with integrated NIC's they just may not be standardized enough

My intergrated graphics does not work properly. In bios it is set to be 32mb and when I ran dxdiag I it said it was 32mb but it cannot run games that require a 32mb of video memory.

Have you ever used Linux? If you have, how does it compare to BSD?

Wine not working does not bug me much. Right now I just have Windows (Wireless USB device was not supported [will dual boot next time Windows crashes]), but everything I have on it can be done on Linux without wine.

There are a few problems though:
1)It will use more reasources. Very important to people who have crappy computers like me.
2)Some people have to pay for the bandwidth they use.
3)Some ads are on your hard drive and the offender would not be effected by the product. Offenders will realise this and increasing the amount of ads that will download themselves onto your hard drive.

They all told me to get Firefox for winfixer and popups. It actully works. you should get it.
