Very nice. Glad to see the 2,000 dollars came in handy.

BOURNE – Hurricane Katrina evacuees hastily handed $2,000 in federal relief money last month have been living it up on Cape Cod, blowing cash on booze and strippers, a Herald investigation has found.
Herald reporters witnessed blatant public drinking at a Falmouth strip mall by Katrina victims living at taxpayer expense at Camp Edwards on Otis Air Force Base. And strippers at Zachary's nightclub in Mashpee, a few miles from the Bourne base, report giving lap dances to several evacuees.

``They were tipping me $5 a pop,'' said a Zachary's dancer named Angel. ``I told them I felt bad taking their money. But I still took it.''
Another dancer said a large group from the military base was in Zachary's recently and she gave lap dances to several of the victims.
``Some spend good money, but others don't,'' she said.

Not much else you can do with only $2,000.

Strippers and booze are a legitimate expense. They help the refugees feel like life has returned to normal.

That had been my thought. I think they were supposed to save it while they were living on the nearby military base. You know, use it for later when they went home.

That said, I think it would have been better spent on toke than on liquor and strippers.

That had been my thought. I think they were supposed to save it while they were living on the nearby military base. You know, use it for later when they went home. How silly. If that had been the intention, then the government could have delayed the paying out of the money until then. Actually, it probably was, but the government just screwed up as usual.

It's a government screwup if you start with the assumption that the typical evacuee is a complete idiot. Do you believe the average evacuee is a complete idiot?

Lasts longer per unit dollar than alcohol. No hangover.

Do you believe the average evacuee is a complete idiot? No, but I find it unlikely that people who have never had money to save before would suddenly figure out how to do it the first time, either.

Lasts longer per unit dollar than alcohol. No hangover.True, but there's the whole legality issue.

Strippers and booze are always to be paid for, whatever the situation, lest the natural cycles be disturbed.

No, but I find it unlikely that people who have never had money to save before would suddenly figure out how to do it the first time, either.

The whole idea behind any government handout of money is the presupposition that the individual will have some idea of how to spend it wisely.

We wouldn't want to insult anyone, in any case.

True, but there's the whole legality issue.

Technically, despite spending 40 billion a year on the War on Drugs, no drug has ever had its street price reduced as a result of the War.

We wouldn't want to insult anyone, in any case. They wouldn't have to insult anyone, just blame the delay on an error.

Technically, despite spending 40 billion a year on the War on Drugs, no drug has ever had its street price reduced as a result of the War.In this case, there is more at stake than simply paying too much.

Meh ... you can give someone money, but you can't tell them how to spend it. You give a homeless man $10, but you didn't buy him.

I agree ... some chronic would have been a much better use of the money, but unfortunately, an illegal use.

Hell, after all those people have been through, I can't say I blame them one bit to be honest.

Two grand for stippers and booze? That's it? I'd have blown the whole wad in one night.
