The Russian trawler "Electron", after getting arrested by the Norwegian Coast Guard for serious fisheries regulation violations in Norwegian waters tried to make a run for it while being escorted to the Norwegian port of Tromsø. You might not think that it's too serious, but it gets slightly more complicated when they're holding two Norwegian Coast Guard inspectors aboard against their will.

The Russians aren't too willing to let the Norwegians arrest the trawler, and are sending a cruiser out to make sure the now five Norwegian Coast Guard vessels don't enter Russian international waters while trying to intercept the "Electron".

What's your opinion on this? Do you think it could trigger a military incident between Norway (and thus NATO) and Russia?

Meh, the two cooperated nicely when they worked together to stop people stealing the Soviet border markers.
I doubt it will cause a major incident with combat or anything. Greece and Turkey have been in similar situations quite often without going to war and they hate eachother a lot more.

NATO can't let Russia get away with this. If we don't react now Russia will see it as weakness and who knows what they'll try next. Nato should immediately launch a strategic nuclear first strike at Russia.

Strange hearing that from plastered Marxists, j/k! ;)

They're probably meeting out there to exchange smuggled goods (drugs, fur, etc) under the guise of a "military incident".

Sink the fishing boat. No more violations from it.

Norwegians complaining about fishery violations. Oh the irony!

For Norway's sake I hope it doesn't. And it would really suck if nuclear war ended up occuring over a fishing trawler. Everyone shoudl just let it slide.

The only more ironic thing would be the Spanish or the Americans doing it...

I hope this is the cause of a nuclear war, simply because it will finally prove my Theory of Why It Is All So Fucking Stupid (In essence, none of this is real, since day one the world has been a movie being played for someone else's entertainment).
The war is coming, the world is ending, and all by the hand of a fishermen.

You can't appropriate Sierra's Second Law (when in doubt, count on stupidity).

I wrote it in 1978.

But that isn't my law. The Theory of Why It Is All So Fucking Stupid seeks to explain your law, by offering the hypothesis that all that has happened on Earth bears so many marks of irony and self-satire, that it can't be happening randomly. Therefore, there is some sort of script that human events has been following since day one, simply to create some divine/demonic/alien tragicomedy.
Its sort of like Intelligent Design applied to International Relations, only it makes sense.

Russia has a right to defend itself and its people against these NATO filth. Those yankee NATO puppets should stay the hell away from Russia, and all other countries that refuse to subjugate themselves to the will of the west.

Ok, as long as we have the intellectual property rights settled on this.

Are you one of the high priests of pre-emptive causality? You know, the guys who can appeal to their god in order to have their bad luck transferred to hapless unbelievers?

No, as actors we are unable to do anything but adlib our way through and try and predict which way the plot is going (Maybe we'll get some prophets at some point who can figure the script out in advance. Or at least get ahold of some previews or plot summaries).
Some day, though, whatever the Hell the conclusion is will come about, and those few that made a great impact will get taken to that Eternal Emmy Party in the sky. The rest of you schlubs will just have to rent the DVD when it comes out, and hope to make it to the sequel.

They should sink the trawler. It was in Norwegian waters, after all.

Maybe that's a bit harsh, but really now.

And I doubt nuclear war will start over this. Though, one never knows, human stupidity can do surprising things.
