if these birds are dumb enough to fly into a turbine then why is it our problem?
okay I know that we put them there for them to fly into, but come on, isn't it kinda silly to accomodate a bird who can't even fly straight?

I cannot believe this. They are shutting down an environmentally friendly source of power because some tree hugging communists think it is unfriendly to birds. These same people oppose nuclear power, coal power, and gas power. In fact, when was the last time California built a power plant? Yet, these same people complain about brownouts in California.
It just goes to prove these people are...well against humans surviving. I'll bet if we all moved into caves, they would complain about the smoke from our cooking fires...oh wait...we don't need fire to eat vegetables. So, they would complain about fires to keep us warm...wait...we could use animal’s skins to keep warm...no wait...we could all go naked and...:headbang:
End of rant.

you know after a while they would probably whine about us eating the vegetables too, I mean veggies have rights, they need equal protection....

OK, I think they're being stupid too, but where the hell did you get the idea that they also complained about brownouts in California? It's also a little funny that you use the term "environmentally friendly" positively while complaining about "tree huggers"...
But anyway, the benefits of using wind power outweigh whatever harm might be caused by these birds dying. I guess if it's easy enough to build windfarms that don't kill birds they should do it, but shutting half of a windfarm down is pretty extreme.

Can't they just put a wire mesh infront of the wind turbines?

Fuck the birds.
Um...no thanks. That's gross.

Couldn't the birds flying into the turbines interfere with the operation of said turbines?
With that said, I like Willamena's idea.
Pfft - let evolution take it's course. It's only the dumbass birds that will get killed - it will improve the gene pool of the rest!
Doesn't hitting a bird with a turbine damage the turbine?

Since I am not at home why doesn't some one photoedit up a picture of a wind turbine so it looks like it has a fancage you seem on personal fans.
I'm sorry...but was there no environmental impact assessment done? Or are these turbines pre-assessment requirements? Even if it was built before the need for environmental impact assessments was legislated (assuming this area actually has such legislation), it is still entirely legitimate to bring up the hazards and ask that steps be taken. It may sound stupid to you, but interfering with a major migration route can have very long-reaching consequences...it's not something to sneeze at.

A solution most likely CAN be found. People just assume this means "OMG TEH ENVIROFACISTS ARE KILLING CAPITALISM AGAIN!!!"
It's a stoppage...and financial pressure will make a solution happen in a timely fashion.

The turbines had impact assessments done. It is likely that the bird strikes were considered inconsequential.
I'd like to know exactly how many birds are actually struck. If it's not a number that biologists can point to and say, "this will have a major impact on the xyz bird population" then it's likely that they considered it of no consequence.
The fact that people are bringing it up now probably means they are bringing it up "again".
