This just in, Kennedy flip-flops on his position about saving people from watery peril.

Watching CNN, they mentioned that it was Mr. Kennedy who called the fire Dept. as well.

I think you may be trying to appeal to the wrong audience, there, Gymoor. Considering the average age of the NS General forumites, I doubt many here would get a Chappaquiddick joke. ;)

And then there is the revisionist notion is that Teddy actually did nothing wrong at Chappaquiddick.

Yes, Kennedy stopped himself from helping someone who died, and Laura Bush didn't stop herself and helped someone to die.*

Seems like the important part of this story was that charges weren't filed. Laura Bush was Laura Welch at that point. Who was the Welch family in Midland that they could exert the same kind of influence that the Kennedys did at Chappaquiddick.
No argument here, I just haven't found any more information than the basic stuff.

Aye ... but you'll notice that Laura Bush is not a public figure or an elected official. What could we do ... impeach her?

Wait a minute, I can joke about my "side", but you guys can't reciprocate? Come on, it was a good line. As they said on Family Guy, "grow a sense of humor, Rocky Dennis!"

Personally, I don't find any of the Kennedys amusing.
When I was growing up in McLean, Virginia, some of the teenage spawn of that family would drive up and down Rt 123 in a large convertible, and throw beer bottles at oncoming cars. They were never ticketed, arrested, or charged with any offense by the police - who ignored them and the resulting complaints.
This happened so many times, including to my car (I had the windshield shattered) that I retch when I hear the Kennedy name.
It was hard enough hearing how they tried to protect their relative who beat a defenseless girl to death with a golf club.
You don't have to be a Bushie or a Republican to hate the Kennedys and their mindset that they can do what they want, while telling everyone else to get on their knees.
I laughed the day that Ted's bodyguard was arrested in the Capitol Building with two submachineguns, two pistols, and about 600 rounds of 9mm on him - Ted defended him sternly, but the bodyguard went to jail.
Seems Ted thinks that he should be able to walk anywhere with plenty of guns and guards, but God forbid anyone else should have one.
No, if anything, this pompous ass family has probably made more Republicans than it realizes. By behaving like arrogant bastards.

Welch Smelch, pull my finger make me belch. Does nothing about the Republicans make you laugh or cringe? Nothing that requires a good bit of patriotic lampooning? Hmmm?

I'm sorry if I ruined your perception of Republicans - I hated the Kennedys long before I became a Republican.

There's plenty about the Republicans that makes me cringe. GWB is the main thing that makes me cringe. But this is an apolitical problem. And it isn't particularly humorous. Traffic fatalities never are. In 1963, Laura Bush was Laura Welch. I don't know whether she was a Republican or not. I don't think she knew George, either. If you're equating this incident to Ted's, I guess I still don't see the humor.
Now if you want to talk about how Bush was misunderestimated, then I'll laugh, too.

Well I, for one, got a good laugh reading this story yesterday, and I looked out for it on the evening news (no takers, from what I saw). I guess the major networks had their reasons for glossing over the story... :p
