Does the word Schadenfreude mean nothing to you? Did she die in vain?

'Jesus hrist'?

Aside from which - an 8 line sig is generally considered the limit round these parts. I'm getting 11 on yours.

What the hell is wrong with people these days? How could you laugh at human pain and human suffering? What is wrong with people???It's long been known that the formula for humor is

Laughs=Pain*Distance

Maybe it hasn't been long enough yet--I didn't find it all that funny, but that's because that's my childhood home that was drowned in the flooding. But anytime there's a tragedy, jokes usually pop up pretty quickly afterward.

People have been doing it since the beginning of time. Humor has healing powers not just for the body but for the psyche.

ANything can be funny if the joke is constructed right.

FOr instance; Why wasn't Bourbon Street badly damaged by Katrina?

Because they're used to dealing with hurricane-related damage every night. :D

*shrugs* Shit happens. No question, the hurricanes were terrible, aweful occurances that caused a great deal of suffering. You have two choices: You can let it get to you and lose yourself in sorrow about it, or you can laugh your ass of about it. No one's gonna benefit from you making it an "untouchable" subject, and frankly, no one's gonna be hurt by you laughing at it.

Everyone deals with pain and anxiety differently. Some people pray. Some people avoid the subject. Some people overflow with sympathetic talk. Some people whistle in the dark and make jokes.

My family shared entirely inappropriate jokes at my mom's funeral. We all laughed. That's how we deal.

The only part I found detestable was the image of the body bag with "ne 1 got rez?". Totally uncalled for, IMHO. However, I don't think it entirely bad to try to joke off a traumatic situation... at least for the right reasons anyway. If someone laughs because people were victimized and killed (and I'm certain no one here did laugh for that reason) then I think they're sadistic bastards who need to be flogged a few times. If they laugh to lessen their shared pain over the event, then that's not something to reel over, methinks.

Aiiieeee. I think I understood like, maybe half of that. No. A third. We'll say a third.

Very much agreed. It's part of the acceptance process. All the people that made jokes about the WTC attacks were called "insensitive" and "inhuman", but most of the people I knew who were laughing at those jokes -- myself included -- were personally influenced by the tragedy at hand.

Now I'm not saying that your pals (if pals they are) on the other forum weren't in the wrong for how outlandish and inappropriate it was at times....I'm just saying that I don't think it's right to say that if people now begin to regard the Hurricane season with humour as a healing tool.....who are we to judge them?

(The two teens from Louisiana who are *ahem* still staying in my basement guest rooms agree with me on this one.)

I can, I do and I have. It is remarkably easy, it is called satire.

And given how detached we are from it all in the UK, it is no different to any other world disaster, and we find black humour in thsoe, why not Katrina?

I think a lot of it has to do with using humor as a coping device for bad things. I'm not prepared to make the assumption that the author of this video is a "monster" or what-have you for making this; lampooning major negative occurances so that we may laugh at them has always been a tool for civilization [at least ours] to deal with things like this. In fact, I might go so far as to argue that we should be able to laugh at certain problems before tackling them.

That said, there are in fact some things that we shouldn't joke about; but most of those are personal occurances and not national ones. Just because I might laugh at a tasteless Katrina or Holocaust joke doesn't mean I wanted either of them to happen, and it certainly doesn't mean I approve of the outcome of those respective scenarios.

You just don't get it do you? Humour is a defence mechanism used in the face of those things we fear or which make us feel uneasy. You advocate that those who confront their fears and the inhumanity inherent in the world be punished?

Um, well probably because he'd have a hard time getting a constructive response to his query without a link. It's sort of hard to condemn something if you're not entirely certain it exists. His linking to it shouldn't be taken as an endorsement of the link's contents.

Honestly, this is like yelling at someone for posting a news article s/he disagrees with.

If, conversely, he posts the exact same thing without a link and says "Trust me, I found this horrible video offsite," then proceeds to describe it, you and twenty other posters will leap down his throat asking for links and such.

I dont think that calling the victums of this hurricane "n00bers" and saying that Texas is "laggy" is very funny. Thhe entire video compaired these horrible disasters which took 10,000+ lives and messed up more to a GAME (Hence the scene with the woman crying and the captiol "I quit this game"). I mean, Come on! Here's one personal account of suffering (Source (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1478976/posts)
The water is quite foul and has a horrible smell as you may imagine.
Analytical tests by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality found
very high levels of fecal coliform (from sewage) in the water, but no
organic chemicals or metals. This is to be expected in a flood of this
magnitude. Folks exposed to the water are to receive Hepatitis A vaccines
and tetanus shots as a precautionary measure.

Mich, lighten up for the love of God. I honestly don't think the author of the video is trying to imply that the disasters are anything less than they were. In all likelihood, an internet-created slideshow with text isn't likely to have any measurable effect on how the situation will be handled.

Getting upset over every little thing like this is only likely to usher in a short lifespan. Generally, people who get as worked up as you seem to be over something as inconsequential as this tend to be vulnerable to things like Aneurysms or heart attacks when an actual "Big Deal" happens.

Now, this primative flash film is hardly what I would call the zenith of comedy, but it has its moments. Either way, it's not worth getting worked up over. Methinks you should lie down for a bit or something if you think this is that bad. If tasteless comedy offends you so much, you might as well blindfold yourself and stick in the 'ol earplugs now.

Oh, and keep them there for the rest of your life. Otherwise, you will be exposed to tasteless comedy.

You're not paying any attention to what I'm saying, are you?

I stated earlier that there are some things that you just don't joke about, but those are typically isolated, personal acts--often involving the initiation of physical force by an entity on another entity, be it yourself, your mother, my mother, the Pope, or what-have you. It's a lot harder to joke about $RAPE or 9/11 for this reason, since these things are contrivances of human action as opposed to an act of nature.

The example you're showing here is a distorted one at best, as it compares two completely different circumstances and attempts to ascribe the same moral code to each. Hurricanes aren't [i]manufactured by man. Someone stabbing my parents would consitute a man-made threat, and the application of humor is in most cases much harder, unless we're talking about that crazy Lorena Babbitt chick hacking off her husband's jacobs. I'm sure a lot of comedians struggled with that one.
