Am I the only one who gets a chuckle out of the fact that you meet so many people on the internet that seem to be so damn tough, and will not hesitate to call you every name in the book, knowing that in real life, they would never have the balls to say anything like that to your face?

I'm not advocating violence of ANY kind, but I just think that people take for granted the fact that with anonimity brings cockiness, and the ones who are too weak to be powerful in real life don't know how to behave when actually given any type of power.

I might just be a prick, its ok if you think so. But sometimes I wonder how cocky most people would be on the net if they had to say something directly to someones face.

That is the beauty of the internet: people tend to behave as they really are. There is a great societal pressure for conformity, resulting in people behaving differently out in public than they would normally do. If anything, I would feel less threatened by someone pretending to be mean than I would someone that was pretending to be nice. People that are mean are worried about getting hurt themselves, so the idea is to drive everyone away from them so they can feel safe. People pretending to be nice do so in an effort to get others to let down their defenses so they can inflict some real damage.

The best thing to do is be genuine in all aspects of life.

Well, I'm much more outgoing on t'internet than in real life, which is funny, because even then nobody would miss me if I never went online again.

I almost never insult someone directly (unless I'm really pissed off), and only say things that I would say to that person to their face.

I'm about as mouthy in person when I'm off work.

I don't discuss politics, religion, etc., at work, so it never comes up.

I haven't been in a fight in about 12 years. People don't seem as thin skinned in real life as they are on the Internet.
