I just picked up my irrepairable laptop from the store I gave it to. The machine's had it, so I took out the harddrive and put it in a USB adapter.

Now, my problem is that I can't access files that were under my username's documents. Does anybody know how I can get around that?

If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, look in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents

Thing is, I'm looking the USB device F:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents. I'm signed in with a USERNAME on C:. I can't access the files on F:.

If I understand correctly you connected the harddrive to another computer, you have the same username on both machines and both the laptop and this computer are running windows xp pro (or a 2000 flavour ?)

If so the my documents folder is probably protected. Even though you had the same username on both computers, they were still different windows installations.
To solve this you need to have administrator rights on the new computer and use your privileges to manually take over the ownership of the folders. Once you have done that you can read them.

The account I'm using to access isn't the same one.

How exactly do I use the administrator rights to change the ownership?

First:
- Open Control Panel/Appearance & Themes/Folder Options.
- Go to the View tab
- Remove the check from the box next to "Use Simple File Sharing".

Then go the folder on the USB drive. Right Click. Choose properties, then Security,Advanced,Owner Tab. Take over ownership.

Did you encrypt those files using the NTFS encryption?
