Consolidated Thread For Apologists

Sierra BTHP
14-10-2005, 17:21
I've seen that a great number of threads are mainly threads for apologists.

Apologists for the excesses of Communism. Apologists for the excesses of Islam. Apologists for the excesses of Christianity. Apologists for the stupidity of the UN. Apologists for Bush. You name it, there's an apologist waiting in the wings.

So, I propose that we consolidate these threads into a single thread. This one.

That might get a little confusing.

The apologies sound so similar.

Here's an example.

Those people who did those bad things <massacre, genocide, etc> are not real <fill in the blank>.

I honestly think the authors of the European Common Agricultural Policy could not have forseen the implications for world grain prices.

Is that how you do it?

Exactly.

I honestly think the average German citizen could not have foreseen the outcome of the recent elections, and therefore, should be held blameless for the current state of the German government.

I know. And most of them aren't true, either...

I've got an idea.

Whenever you hear an apology that takes the form:

"Those people who did <fill in horrible thing here> are not real <fill in name of group being defended here>."

we'll call it a Sierraism.

You display remarkable modesty in recommending the eponym, Mr. BTHP.

So... You want to be associated with neo-nazis, communists, terrorist sympathizers, and so on?

You'll notice that the list is much longer than you think.

Because we all know that this is a sound arguement -

Person/Group X, who was/said they were Y, did Z, therefore Z automatically follows Y.

And anyone who disagrees is an apologist. Gotcha.

Of course he (and the bombers) wasn't (weren't) Canadian, he was American. And how do we know he was American at the time?
He did something naughty. Whenever a group acts like jerks, they automatically become American.
Nazism? American.
Christainity (which was born in the Mid East and Prospered greatest in Europe)? American.
Resource Consumption? American.
The Army of All Evil? American.

Some of the bad stuff is French too. Don't forget conservativism and anyone who doesn't hate the US and its citizens personally. After all, god forbid something has to be proven American to be called American. Why mention the French? They're a group of people who apparently like to elect jerks.

Definitely American. Hell, the Welsh were Americans before there were Americans.
Sort of like they were the original non-American Americans.

Chretien turned out to be an idiot. He was no Trudeau and he's also no Paul Martin, you'll get no argument from me about Chretien, the ONLY thing I liked about him was he had the balls to tell the Americans to go F*ck themselves when it came to Iraq. And he did love this country, but that was a long time ago.

The worst type of apologism I can think of lately, at least, has been "well, we should not oppose the death penalty for homosexuals in Iran; it's part of their Muslim culture".

The absolute worst thing is that many of the apologists for this are my liberal brethren. In my opinion, our opposition to homophobia should know no national boundaries.

No, no, you forget that we inspired the German eugenics programme. Not to mention letting Hitler use our territory for troupe deployments. And then there's the sterilisation of the mentally disabled... Oh, we have tonnes of stuff that was evil and that people try to explain away.

That was Norway - Norway hands out the peace prize. And he did deserve it that year - it was a very optimistic time. Perhaps you should review?
