my 3 favorites are :
Led Zeppelin : Stairways to heaven
Deep Purple : When a blind man cries
Axxis : Hold you

Only the Lonely by Roy Orbison
Does Head over heels by Tears for Fears count as a ballad? If so that's up there too.
But of course neither are heavy or hard bands. Just rock bands.

I'm not really into rock ballads, but The Doors' "Light my Fire" is nice, although mostly instumental.. Of course, I like instrumental music more than rock singing, so that makes sense for me.. really though, any song with a 4-minute organ solo has my vote. :)

Ah, yes... Skid Row. One of the bands labelled as "Hair Metal" that wasn't "Hair Metal", and they were actually good.

Off the top of my head (and because it hasn't been mentioned yet) I'd have to say "November Rain" by Guns 'n Roses. It wouldn't be my favorite, but I figured I'd mention it.
