I had posted a thread about whether or not the DOJ's new obsession with obscenity would extend to hollywood films. I can't link to it because the search function doesn't seem to work anymore, but now I have evidence that mainstream films may really end up being targeted by the US government.

Hmmm I wonder if the establishment clause is going to be around much longer?

[quotethe way the provision is written, a sex scene could trigger the provision even if the actors were clothed. While the language is designed to capture "lascivious exhibition of the genitals," other legal decisions have said that "lascivious exhibition" could occur when the genitals are covered.[/quote]

I bet these people don't get laid much.

I'm feeling lascivious myself.

Think of it this way. Post something pornographic on the web. You live in the US. Your state has an agreement with the State of Florida for extradition.

Some sheriff in Polk County, Florida goes to your website. Joins. Pays using a credit card. He then downloads your stuff.

And charges you with distributing pornography - even though your server is not in Florida or Polk County.

One morning, your local police show up and arrest you - and ship you to Florida.

"Wilson operated an adult Web site out of his Lakeland apartment. The site became controversial after it started running photos, allegedly sent in by soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, showing scenes of dead men and women, purported to be insurgents. Many of the dead were horribly mutilated.

Wilson defended his Web site in recent interviews, saying that the pictures show the uncensored reality of war.

Wilson was arrested on charges relating to the amateur pornography section of his Web site, not the dead body pictures.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said that the pornography on the site "shocks the conscience of the community."

And Americans don't understand why everyone else thinks your nation is utterly barmy?!

Oh, we understand, its just we tend to think other nations are just as, if not more, barmy. In your own unique ways.

But really, most of the worlds media attention is on us, so we don't wind up having a large and handy catalogue of reasons why other, less significant nations are barmy.

Honestly? We are. It's just in decidedly less spectacular ways, and it usually impacts a LOT fewer people, and rarely kills anyone at all (at least in comparison).

When the EU made the european version of the US DMCA for example, we took it much further than you guys did. If a nation were to adopt the laws directly, a school teacher would land in court for showing a movie or playing a tape in class, even with the written permission of the author(s) of the material, if s/he didn't pay a copyright organisation... And the company that manyfactured the device he used to make a copy of the material (assuming he even bothered to do that) would join the unfortunate teacher. Depending on the age of the pupils, they'd also end up in court.

So yea, we too are gibbering fools. But it's less spectacular, as you'll probably agree.

Really though, between your wars, your urban decay, your lack of social initiatives & the mongrel Bush, it's beyond hard not to point & laugh... Or run away & hide..

It's not that any other country is above infantile idiocy, but we aren't quite as in-your-face about it as America are these days. I could readily provide you with a neverending list of UK idiocy if you wanted, but it would be more subtle.
