1. Kenya- Safaris, wildlife parks, Swahili, Gede ruins, Lake Magadi
2. Japan- Stunning temples and gardens, I've always wanted to visit a Buddhist temple.
3. Iran- Rich culture, hang-gliding, Tehran (even though its not the most beautiful city in the world :) ), city markets
4. Chile- Alpacas! Haha.... I want to visit Chile before the country is destroyed by industries.
5. Peru- Colonial cities, Cuzco, Machu Picchu, Nazca Lines, Peruvian Andes
6. Costa Rica- I'd love to explore Costa Ricas lush rainforests.
7. Greenland- Aurora borealis, mythical landscapes
8. Nova Scotia- Apparently people in Nova Scotia are kind of crazy, and a lot of fun. Plus I hear the coastline is quite stunning.
9.Egypt- Pyramids, The Sphinx, the Nile, amazing culture/history
10. New Zealand- whale-watching, variety of fauna, lots of fun activites to keep you busy
11. Australia- Great Barrier Reef, Sydney, beautiful beaches. One of my best friends recently got back from Australia and said it was one of the most interesting places she had ever been, and the nightlife was fantastic.
12. Bhutan- Pristine environment, Amazingly stunning architecture
13. Eritrea- Adulis, lounging by the Red Sea, Dankalia
14. Antarctica- Because its Antarctica! I don't know much about traveling there but I believe you can only go as far in as Mawson Station with or without a guide.

Here's my city list.

London
Rome
Carthage (the ruins)
Moscow
Tokyo
Boston
New Orleans (musical heritage is too much for a stinking hurricane to take down)
Athens

why? I'm a history buff, which is why I wanna visit Rome, Carthage, and Athens. I looove music, which is why NO and Boston are there, and I just get fascinated by culture, hence moscow and tokyo.

London is just because I'm British, and haven't seen it. That and I could drop in on parliament, assuming they don't charge me under the terror laws.

South Africa is the rape capital of the world, more than 300,000 armed robberies occur there annually, about 91 murders per day (their murder rate is second only to Colombia's), they are an international drug smuggling route comparable to Colombia, and racism on both sides flourishes as never before. Hardly a safe place to visit.

i go to aruba every year at the beginning of november for about 10 days

its a fabulous place for a beach/gambling vacation.

Because how often do you hear someone say they've been to Antarctica? I would love to see the sheer grandeur of Antarctica, being that its virtually untouched. They say its the closest you'll get to visiting another planet.

8. Nova Scotia- Apparently people in Nova Scotia are kind of crazy, and a lot of fun. Plus I hear the coastline is quite stunning.

Crazy is an understatement. If you do some, I highly reccomend the middle of September, the best views and not too hot or warm climate is then (Temperature likes to go from -40C to 40C pver the course of a year.
And yes, the coastline is stunning!

Let me give you some advice on your big world trip. Spend the extra money (so that means saving a bit more after the kids college is taken care of) and don't go in a group. What I suggest is a well thought out FIT using private guides in many locations. It will take your trip from being a vacation to being an experience.

Then Canada, Mexico, Italy, France, Greece, Germany, and Spain.

I'll have to remember that! Though I'm not afraid of the cold, the Polish winter is reasonably harsh :). Its always nice to talk to people from wherever you're planning on visiting. I found that getting information from people who have lived there/are living there/have traveled there is always the best way to start out a trip.

Well, when you do finally get around to heading this way, send me a TG or something and I'll give you a list of places to visit that arn't usually as well mentioned in the travel guides (which are all adds for local hotels, B&B's and stuff anyway).

It takes 4 hours to drive straight from Halifax to the southern tip of the province, and 6 to hit the northern tip, so if you want to enjoy it, plan on a few weeks of being here and rent a nice car.

I am sure the stats are correct but like I said I felt safe and my clients have felt safe and we are not talking group trips here. I have even sent single females to South Africa. I have sent over 50 people this year alone to South Africa. Not a single one was raped, robbed or murdered. While I would not walk about Johannesburg at night, Cape Town, the wine district is not a problem. Of course the National Parks don't seem to have the crime problem either. And trust me the Ngala reserve in Kruger is a must see for everyone. The numbers are not everything. You have to look at who is being killed and why. Are tourists the targets? Where is the crime happening? I can understand your caution but It wont stop me from going back or sending people on safari in South Africa. I know my traveling there effects the people.
I hope for the good. I do hope that you feel South Africa becomes safe enough to visit because I love it. I love all of Southern Africa. Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Zimbabwe.

I did move there to live in them for about 2 years.
I am one of those people who moved somewhere new about every two years. I got it from my dad he was military. I have lived in all the regions of the US and been to all but one state, Maine. Travel is a must do for me. Right now I live in Chicago where I have almost made it to the 4-year mark. Falling in love seems to have broken me of my need to move but not my love of travel.

Yes, I am. I wouldn't feel safe going to a country ruled by such a racist man.

I can understand that.

I often wonder why we Americans do not travel abroad as much as say Europeans.
For some it is physical safety.
Others it is our work ethic most US citizens just don't have that kind of time off.
For some it is fear of supporting something they don't approve of.

I know there is a testable theory in there somewhere but I don't have the brains to figure it out.

Others it is our work ethic most US citizens just don't have that kind of time off.
As far as I know Japanese people don't get too much time off either, and they still travel a lot.
I do think the size of the country matters, too. The US are a little larger than your average European country, meaning that while French people travel abroad when going to Germany, Americans still stay inside their own country travelling from South Carolina to Florida, for example.

For some it is fear of supporting something they don't approve of.

Can't quite agree with this one, seen as about half of the population doesn't fully support their own government :p

I went to Zimbabwe. I did the tourist route and did not stray from it. Generaly you start in Victoria Falls and follow a chain of National Parks and then come back where you started. I did not visit any towns other the Vic Falls and Livingston. There were a few fishing villages here and there you could visit and there are generaly far away from the striff. I do not believe the government will protect it's tourist dollars. We saw it end the confilcts that were happen around Victoria Falls and Liningston quickly. Money talks and tourist dollars talk very loud in that part of the world.

I don't think it has to do with country size. We get Europeans in droves; far more of them visit the US then American travel there. Air costs are about the same so it isn't that price. But hotel and food can be much more expensive if you want only American style. We go to Mexico, Caribbean, Canada like the English go to Germany and Greece. But even there we avoid Caribbean countries that have had problems in the past as if they are still going on.
Would rather go to the familure then the unknown. The English look for new experience much more often.

But what I mean when I say abroad is out of your home region. That would mean Africa, China, Middle East, India, Bhutan, South Pacific when comparing United States travelers with European travelers. I send far more English travelers to these counties and even more exotic places then I send Americans. Our whole way of thinking about vacations and holidays are different. I believe (I am talking to an coworker from London as I write this) for them that is because to some extent it is expected.

I have never had a European cancel on political or philosophical grounds. I have had American do it. While I don't think worrying over supporting a drug dealer is a major focus I do think for part of our middle class it is an important factor.

I don't think I helped clear much up.

ya ya put that on my list. i do intend to do that one of these years. did you go in summer? were the roads very very busy?

I arrived in San Francisco July 1, spent 4 days there (you do NOT need a car in that city -- in fact, better off without one.) Then travelled north up into Napa/Sonoma, stayed overnight in Novato, then went south to San Jose. Saw the Winchester Mystery Mansion (FUN!!!) and then at Santa Clara hooked up with the Pacific Coast Highway.

The only place the traffic was hairy was travelling through San Francisco -- nothing memorable going north or south. The Pacific Coast Highway is a slow road, though -- be prepared to max out your speed at 30, and when they tell you to slow to 15 -- it's not a suggestion, it's a MUST. We're talking hairpin turns down a cliffside, and one lane in each direction.

Drive south -- you'll be on the Pacific side and the views are astounding.

Traffic -- not much. You can go 20 minutes easy without seeing anyone -- and there are pull-offs everywhere so you can admire the scenery or let someone who'd like to go faster get by you.

Spent 2-3 days heading south -- Don't miss 17 mile drive around Monterey by ANY means, or Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Morro Bay is pretty impressive, and if you arrive in San Luis Obispo, several nights a week they have open air markets and music. WONDERFUL.

:) And if you can, DO IT IN A CONVERTABLE. I didn't my first time, but you better believe I will the next!

Carthage is not that cool. On the plus side, when you go to carthage you can also visit tatooine on the same trip. And don't forget to take in hotel security beating young children on the beach.

I would also add St. Petersburg to your list. It's one of the few places I visited that I can really say was worth the effort.

thanks for the info! im gonna have to make plans for next spring.

If you're a member of the AAA, they will give you TONS of maps, guidebooks, and suggestions.

If you're not -- what are you waiting for?! ;) the travel services alone are worth the membership fee.

I've had a dream for many years now of shipping a Harley Davidson motorcycle to Portugul and driving it all the way accross the entire EurAsian continent to the East China Sea. It's unlikely I'll ever get to do it, but it would be the trip of a lifetime! "And here you see the bandits I met while crossing the Steppes in Russia. I had to bribe them with American hootch!" :D

I've already been to most of the places I want to visit.

The only places I haven't been to I still have a burning desire to visit are:

Bhutan
Buenos Aires
St. Petersburg
Ambrym or Tanna in Vanuatu
Mt. Athos
Istanbul
China proper
Jerusalem (but only after a final settlement between Israelis and Palestinians)

Otherwise, I've more or less covered the places I want to visit, and been to some I never wanted to visit in the first place. Putting it in terms of countries, the places I've been to include:
