Astros vs. White Sox

I hope!

Oh, man, are you and I ever on the same wavelength!!

Listen...I was born on the South Side of Chicago, been a Sox fan my whole life, 34 years worth!!
And then, when I was a teenager, my folks moved to Texas, and I became a 'Stros fan as well...they became my local team, because I sure as shit couldn't root for the Rangers!!
So I have been a 'Stros fan for 20 years now!

And, in my lifetime, NEITHER of my favorite teams has EVER won a pennant! And here, my ultimate dream is actually possible...BOTH MY TEAMS WINNING THEIR FIRST PENNANT IN MY LIFETIME....IN THE SAME YEAR!!!

Goddamn, I'd have to root for a seven-game Series and a TIE!!

I'd be thrilled whoever won that Series, but, as I have been a longer-time Sox fan, I'd have to give the slight edge to the Sox. But a 'Stros victory would be sweet, too!

So, I am TRULY hoping for a Sox-Stros Series!!! Because those are my two favorite teams in the whole wide world!!

It rarely does nowadays, and even then feels less outdrawn and boring than baseball, as stuff actually happens in Cricket, as compared to baseball where the pitcher takes half an hour to throw the ball, while the hitter misses it most of the time, anyway.

When you think the Anglo-Saxons can't invent anything more boring or outdrawn than Cricket, they come up with baseball...

It's not boring...Baseball is a thinking man's game. It's more a game of anticipation than action.

What's fun about baseball...if you understand the strategy...is to try and guess the pitches...what you would throw in a given situation, etc. It's more about thinking, strategy, and anticipation.

Besides, Football, basketball, and hockey all suck. they all move too fast, I can't figure out what the fuck is going on...to sya nothing for soccer.

And, if you are looking for a boring sport...you forgot GOLF!!! Now THERE is a boring-assed sport if ever I saw one! I get more excited picking out socks! Jeez, you ever watch golf on TV?? It's like watching flies fuck!!

I mean...think of the BRAINS that it takes to play golf....hitting a ball with a crooked stick.....and then....walking after it. And THEN....HITTING IT AGAIN!!! I say, pick it up, asshole, you're lucky you found it...pick it up, put it in your pocket and go the fuck home, willya!!??

Sheesh. Golf if the ultimate bore in sports. Not even Tiger Woods can make it exciting.

I love trying to get into a groove with a pitcher, and try and think what pitch he will throw next, in a given situation.

See, if I call correctly, and the batter makes an out, I feel I have correctly solved the problem. If the pitcher calls a different pitch, and th batter hits it, I feel even better! And if the pitcher throws a different pitch, and the batter makes an out, I feel the pitcher was lucky. :D

How hard can it be? 1 run for every time a player makes it safely to home base.

Actually, four guys made it to home that game, but one was tagged out at the plate, and so there were only 3 runs scored in that game.

Five days, not weeks. The problem with the cricket that most people are exposed to is that it is at the international level, and quite often there is such a huge disparity in the quality of the teams it all seems a little futile.

When it's actually played between two decent evenly matched sides it works quite well.

Baseball is a setpiece game, where the action occurs in turns. In many ways it's similar to chess, only with a lot of uncertainty in every action.

Beyond that, one of the keys to baseball is the suspense and the anticipation of each upcoming action. It's a nail-biter. Each pitch can change the course of the game. Just because a team is down 10-0 in the bottom of the ninth doesn't mean that victory is beyond reach. Espescially in close games such as this evenings game, where a one-run homerun could have changed the course of the game.

But yes, even though I'm an avid Cleveland fan, I'm behind the White Sox this post season. Hell, they're from the Central Division, they enjoy playing the game, and they haven't won the series since 1917. It's the Sox turn. This was a great game though, Buehrle did an excellent job, and the Angels fought like hell.

Yeah, I remember that last year. They almost beat Australia, which I found really surprising. Think about this, though. I'll give you some estimated averages for the size of our NFL players, based on position.

Offense
--------

Quarterback: 6'1" (6'2" and 6'3" being optimal)
Halfback: 5'9" (5'10" being optimal)
Fullback: 5'11" (which is optimal)
Center: 6'3" (6'5" being optimal)
Tackle: 6'4" (which is optimal)
Guard: 6'4" (6'5" being optimal)
Tight End: 6'3" (6'4" - 6'6" being optimal)
Wide Receiver: 6'1" (6'3" being optimal for a posession receiver, while 5'10" is optimal for a speedy, agile receiver)
Kicker: 5'10" (no optimal height needed)
Punter: 5'11" (no optimal height needed)

Defense
--------

Defensive Tackle: 6'4" (which is optimal)
Defensive End: 6'3" (6'5" being optimal)
Linebacker: 6'4" (6'3" - 6'5" being optimal)
Cornerback: 6'0" (which is optimal)
Safety: 6'1" (which is optimal)
=======================

Huge people on average. Oh, and here's a link for the Denver Broncos' roster. http://www.nfl.com/teams/rosters/DEN Look at how big their team is! Just think of these guys playing a team from Japan. They'd make them look like midgets!

No...it is good pitching and good defense.

These two clubs both play a style of baseball that is known as "small ball." what you do in small ball is to manufacture runs in any way that you can, usually by stealing bases, bunting, sacrifice flies...that sort of thing. It's what a team does when up against good pitching and good defense, especially if neither team has a lot of pop in their bats. The sox have a good amount of pop in their bats, but no real power hitters that are gonna hit like 60 home runs a year or anything.

No, you are just a jumped-up, testosterone-filled, action-dependent young male. nothing wrong with that, but it predisposes you to like a rough-and-tumble game like football, and to not enjoy the more startegy-based, less action-packed game of baseball.
For me, since I enjoy and understand the strategy of baseball, it is far more enjoyable to me. football moves to fast, and I don't understand the strategy, the plays, the set-ups...what situation calls for what play, etc. I can't follow it, so, for me, it sucks. I only watch the super Bowl, and even then, only for the commercials. Because THE BEST commercials come out at Super Bowl.
See, baseball, as I said, is more a game of anticipation and strategy, and less action-oriented...but, I understand the strategy...and what play/pitch is called for in a given situation...on what count the batter ought to do what with the pitch, etc...and, so...for me...because I can strategize and anticipate along with it, it makes it very enjoyable for me.

So, I enjoy baseball, I like it...and your suggestion to destroy it was highly offensive to me.

That said, I will say that baseball DOES translate better in person, or on the radio, rather than TV. But, when you get a really great defensive play in the field, a fine catch on a long ball in the outfield, executed perfectly, it is very exciting to watch on TV. But most times, you are waiting for that moment, you are anticipating and strategizing.

The only thing I understand about football is that it is basically "Let's take their fucking land!!" It's a ground-acquisition game, taken ten yards at a time, but I have no idea what a nickel or a dime defense is, or what situations call for it. I have no idea what a screen play is...or what situation calls for it...no idea when it is better to run or pass...when it is better to go for first down on 4th...or punt....I have no idea how an onside kickoff works, none of it...I just plain don't understand it and don't want to, either. so it is frustrating at best, and quite frankly, for me, impossible to enjoy. I don't know what the fuck is going on or what to expect next!

Now, with baseball, this is not the case. Then, too, I'm a fairly good fast-pitch softball player myself, and so, while there are some differences, it basically is the same as baseball, and so, it is a game I can play...and play well...which increases my understanding of it...and my ability to enjoy watching others play it.

Similarly, I mentioned being a league bowler. Thus, I can watch bowling tournaments and get interested in them, too. I understand what is going on, and can admire a great strike, a wicked hook, an awesome spare pickup, especially the dreaded 7-10 split, which I have seen picked up...and, once, I personally watched a bowler on an opposing team get a 300 game, and it was damn exciting! Fortunately, they were not bowling against MY team that night!! Nevertheless, it is my playing these sports and understanding them that leads to my enjoyment. Football holds no interest for me, it is merely aggravation.

Especially the way people go freaking nuts over stupid high-school football. what the hell is there to get excited about there? 99.9% of them are never gonna make the pros, it doesn't mean jack...unless, it happens to be your school playing. but people who have no kids in school, and who are long out of school themselves...still go nuts over freaking high school football games and I just plain don't understand it.

What a pussy way to get the baserunner on. I mean, when was the last time you saw a batter reach base on a "dropped" 3rd strike?

ACtually Football is more popular than Baseball is so Football is the ONLY sport worth a damn :D

Well, I take that back, because I'm a league bowler...so bowling is also a good sport.

I'll agree with you there from one league bowler to another :)

How hard can it be? 1 run for every time a player makes it safely to home base.

Actually, four guys made it to home that game, but one was tagged out at the plate, and so there were only 3 runs scored in that game.

In game 2 yep. But in Game 1, 8 made it to home base with 5 of those coming from the Angels! Come on Lyric. Chicago sucks :D

I would have rathered it was the Red Sox, but if we lost to the White Sox, then that proves: 1. The entire MLB has gone to hell in a hand-basket and 2. We need more guys that look like Jesus. I mean, we won the last world series because Johnny Damon looked like Jesus. If we had a whole team full of Jesus', think of the POWER!

Happened to me alot when I used to play and could reach base that way. Heck in one of my games, one of my teammates reached 2nd on a dropped third strike :D Now that was funny.

Not a bad call. The right call if you look at the replay angles. The catcher clearly didn't have control of the ball when it touched the ground and the Ump never called the batter out. Had the catcher been doing his job he would have tagged the runner or thrown to first which you should always do on the third strike if the ball is that close to the ground at the end of the pitch.

Edit - Even I know this and I hate baseball.

We love to have the occasional cub fan drop in on the list, and beat their chest about how awesome their team is, and then watch them crawl under their rocks in mid-June, never to be heard from again, until the next year. We love to hand it to the occasional brave Cub fan signing onto that list.

I have, in my life, three over-200 games. My highest ever was 231, then 225, and 207.

The 231 game kinda pissed me off, because I finished that game with seven strikes, then opened the next game with six more strikes...If I'd only managed to do them all in the same damned game instead of split over two games, I'd have a frickin' 300 game to my credit, since you only need 12 strikes in a row for a 300. I actually got thirteen in a row. But they were split between the two games. Pissed me off royally, once I figured out I coulda had a 300 game!
