Jobs for the independant?

OK, so I've been having a frustrating time at work lately. It seems I spend as much time fixing other peoples screw ups (even from our vendors!) than I do actually doing something constructive.

When frustration overwhelms me I like to play the 'change careers' game. I try to think of a career I can change to where I do not have to depend on other people doing their job right in order to do my own job well.

So far all I come up with are a bust - Truck driver - gotta get the truck koaded and unloaded - and traffic...

Author - need a publisher - PR, publicist.

etc.

What are your thoughts. Want to play?

I have heard of it before then, I hear you make a pretty damn decent chunk of change from it.

So I hear, but you have to move quite a bit of volume to make any money out of it.

I would suggest working for yourself.

I have done import/export. Although just recently within the past year stopped due to lack of quality control out of China. I employed one person running it which now works for me managing the bars.

I own two bars/clubs and love that although thats not my main line of work. About to open two more.

I am also a Realestate broker which in itself has many ups and downs.
Although it does help me in my current business of commercial loans and business funding. I find this job to be the most rewarding money wise and for just pure job satisfaction.

Basically, any job where you're at the very bottom of the stack. You don't have to depend on anyone, because you're doing their dirty work; hence, they are the ones that depend on you.
A lab rat, comes to mind - making stock solutions and calibrating pipettes is pretty independant (if mind-numbing) stuff. Maybe working at a small retail outlet, or being a dishwasher.

Have you thought about being a "street musician"

I love street musicians. Though still a teen, I intern with the local Children's Theatre as a techie and I do sound for local bands, as well as supervise and operate lighting and sound equipment for my school. It's usually me that is being depended on, and I find that I can set my own schedule kind of.

I went to college with a guy who I knew would drop out and never amount to anything because he spent all his time at the bar drinking and meeting women. I was right about his dropping out, but I was wrong about his not amounting to anything. He leveraged his love of bars and women into a very successful business after watching the movie "Coyote Ugly". He now owns a business where, for a fee, he will bring a van full of sexy women to your bar where they act as provocative waitresses. He also has rates for special performances by his girls (such as "chocolate pudding wrestling"). Bars and clubs hire him because the advertising leading up to the event attracts more patrons, and during the event its self the women entice the men to order more drinks.

What do you do with the garbage? Who provides the cleaning materials? What about the nimrods who leave disgusting things in the streets which take you extra time and effort to deal with? (nasty trash, illegally parked vehicles, etc.)

Nope, not it.

Lone software developer. Be the only programmer in the company, and make sure nobody else really understands what you do.

Occasionally they might give you targets or things to achieve, which are easy enough. Any other interaction can be handled by looking confused and saying "eh?".

No, if you're working at the bottom of the stack you still have to clean up after your co-workers' dumb mistakes. You just don't have to worry about your underlings.
