Considering it's a poll of Alabama residents I'm actually relieved and encouraged that only about a third of them thought it was god's punishment.

Guys, I think I'm losing my faith in humanity. I've tried very hard to hold onto it through the failure of Communism, the election and reelection of George Bush, the recent study suggesting 1/5 Americans believe the sun revolves around the Earth, and Pat Robertson... but I'm not sure how much I can take.

I mean honestly, everytime I set the bar for humanity a little lower looking for that happy compromise between faith in humanity and a realistic view, we blow my mind and go lower.

Wrath of God, you say? Katrina was NOT a natural phenomenon created by air currents and sea temperatures in the atlantic, but the WRATH OF GOD? Ughhhhh..... the ignorance... the ignorance... overwhelming... cannot stand...

Of course it was created by air currents and sea temperatures. But who makes the wind blow and the who dictates the temperature of the ocean? That's right, our one true lord here on earth as He is in heaven, Jesus Christ.

Not just letting communistic and socialistic ideas be fully buried is killing my faith in humanity. I know, lets go be drinking buddies and we can both bitch about how the other's prefered economic system is winning in its drive to strangle humanity.
the election and reelection of George Bush,
Meh, humanity would still be failing if Gore and Kerry had won. Do you want a bullet in the brain or the liver? We chose liver both times, so we get to last a bit longer and spasm more on our way out.
the recent study suggesting 1/5 Americans believe the sun revolves around the Earth,
I'd say that this means more about how sarcastic Americans are when you ask them stupid questions.

The ironic thing about Pat Robertson is that his success and popularity is proof that there is no kind and loving God.

When you have been around as long as my immortal frame (Hey, I haven't died yet, so there is no proof that I am not immortal) has, you learn that humanity is just another set of cattle. So the trick is to cook them very well and not eat the brain in order to prevent getting Mad Human Disease, I think is the point there.

Oh, and I think that's pretty foolish. Just as foolish as thinking katrina was an act of god. But do I think that these people are foolish because they are black? No. If I met a white person who thought this, I would think they are pretty foolish too. The same goes for anyone who thinks that katrina was an act of god, whether or not they're christian.

Lol. Not quite. Blaming particular people for their actions and beliefs is not bigoted, no matter what their race/creed. Giving anyone a free pass just because of their race/creed is. I have no problem calling a black person who kills someone evil. I have no problem with calling a Christian who lives a good life and helps the needy a great person. Race, color, creed, gender and political affiliation don't matter. Thoughts and actions do.

Nice try though.

So 1/3 will say that God's wrath created the hurricane, huh? And just how many will admit that they might have made God angry? 2%? 1%?

It's not God's wrath, though it certainly is humanity's fault. Global warming is certainly a product of humans.

People that answer "yes" to that survey make me want to smash my head against a wall, but that would reduce the total number of functioning brain cells in the average human, so I'll restrain myself this time.

Considering it's a poll of Alabama residents I'm actually relieved and encouraged that only about a third of them thought it was god's punishment.

Being as my Fathers people are from Alabama I agree.
This poll give me hope. They may have a long way to go but 15 years ago it would have been at least 40%.

No, you're just trying to redirect the argument because you can't stand the implications. Like I said, If I hadn't included the modifyer in question, you would have undoubtedly accused me of stereotyping all Christians...which is exactly why I included it. You're trying to deflect the argument in a rather unsubtle way, which is rather telling.

I could very well give a shit what the implications of this are. Try again.

The 'modifier' you used is no different than the 'modifier' used for any other bigoted statement. It is used in the following manner "I am not prejudiced, but..." followed by a prejudiced statement. The modifier, in spite of what you may hope, does not reduce the bigorty of the statement.

How big was that sample, when did they call if they called, if they did it on the computer, how many Alabamians actually know how to use one (just kidding), etc.?

I never trust polls. But anyone that did say yes to that poll is a dipshit.
" Asked of 500 Adults"
States right in the top

Also may want to look at their statement of methodology

How this poll was conducted: This SurveyUSA poll was conducted by telephone in the voice of a professional announcer. Respondent households were selected at random, using Random Digit Dialed (RDD) sample provided by Survey Sampling, of Fairfield CT. All respondents heard the questions asked identically.

With that sample size the variance is within an alpha of .05

I'm not going to be preached to by someone who thinks 15% represents an entire demographic. When I said "these Christians in particular," I meant those Christians in particular. There's no bigotry involved whatsoever. It's no different from saying, "Islam is a religion of peace, but the fundamentalists who are willing to blow themselves up to hurt us suck."

Umm, isn't that the same demographic which thinks AIDS was invented and spread by the government and OJ didn't do it?

See, here you're applying the actions of a small minority to the entirety of a group. THAT's bigotry. You are a shameless hypocrite and your attempts to parse my original statement in a nonsensical way is intellectually dishonest and pathetic. Now crawl back into your cave, punk, and let the grownups talk.

Nobody is preaching, child. I only see you refusing to examine yourself and grasping firm hold of your denial. Justify it all you want, you only comfort yourself.

Such hostility - typical of someone in denial. Attack me all you like for exposing you to yourself if it makes you feel good, but it does not remove your blemish.

As far as my statement - it could be modified to say a "statistically signifigant sample" and be more accurate (and less pithy), but the point would not be different; just because the sample population says so does not make them right - and there is nothing offensive about that. (Nor is there any reason for me to preface it with "I don't have a problem with...")

Believe me on this - I have far more first-hand experience confronting ethnic, religious and gender bigotry than you could imagine; You are out of your league. Now take to heart what I have suggested and re-examine your stereotypes, particularly of christians and 'southerers' (and possibly rural citizens). It may not be as apparent to you as to an outside observer, but you certainly have issues particular to these groups.

Oh, and I would suggest that in the future you not call me, or anyone else, an 'asshat' in any other threads. If you must mis-report statistics which I share, you could at least post links to the source so everyone can see for themselves the actual data. It will save you embarrasment in the future...

What's to justify? You made an openly bigoted statement. I did not,

You started the attack. Then you follwed it up by an openly bigoted statement, which I exposed.

I wasn't aware that 15% was a significant percentage...it's less than the number of people in America who think the Sun goes around the Earth, after all. And then you said blacks were a demographic that believes that the government created AIDS...when 85% of them apparently don't. If that's not bigoted, it's at least inaccurate.

How the hell do you know this? Do you know a goddam thing about me? No. As far as league goes, I have run circles around you, feller. Stop embarrassing yourself. As far as my views about Christians (which is my background, after all,) I never said anything against them in the post you took umbrage against. What is did say is I had a problem with those and only those that considered Katrina an act of divine retribution. Apparently you feel that lumping an entire people together is acceptible, while singling out certain specific people who have a certain specific belief (Katrina = God's wrath) not.

Oh, and I would suggest that in the future you not call me, or anyone else, an 'asshat' in any other threads. If the hat fits, wear it. Perhaps you should show the same restraint before hypocritically calling someone a bigot. Oh, and here's your first post sharing your statistics:

While you're at it, you should discuss the 15% of black people who feel that AIDS was created by the government as a form of genocide against black people.

Ouch. It must hurt to get slapped down so hard.
