The sound that the smoke alarms in my house make.

Yes, I know, they're designed to be irritating so that you don't ignore them or sleep through them. But my mother-in-law inevitably sets them off every time she steps into my kitchen. Don't get me wrong - I actually like my mother-in-law, and she produced a wonderful daughter, but I really wish she'd let me or my wife do the cooking when she's here. We're both excellent cooks, and rarely fill the kitchen with smoke.

The high-pitched hum of a Television has been my favorite lately. My room-mates never turn the *&^% thing off. The only time it is not on is when all six of us are at class. Literally. I get home at 3am a couple nights ago, and five minutes later one of them walks in, and plays video games for the next three hours, rather than the logical idea of going to bed. And our tv has a loud hum. You can hear it aproaching from outside of the apartment, or at least I can. But the pitch it hums it is particullary iritating to my ears, and cuts through most any other noise. And TV in general is just getting old. Other bad noises include fingernails and blackboard, a clutch that is starting to go bad, brake pads that need replaced, and begining clarinetists.

My ex-boyfriend. Constant freakin' talking. Can't escape, either, 'cos he ALWAYS hangs out the same places I do.

*Sigh* I"ve learned my lesson; no more dating within my social circle. I've got to start bringing in new guys who we can later shun.

Yep, it is truly a cacophony of evil to flay the spirits of men. Part of why I try to stick with night fill whenever possible.

just wondering, what is the most irritating, stressful sound you can think of??? :)

Passing trains. I can tune out most noises, but when I'm waiting at a train station and a train passes by, I always jump. As a train gets closer, the noise builds up and up until it's deafening and I always expect it to keep on getting louder.

I thought of something else -- breathing. I can't stand people who are extremely loud breathers.

Also hate the sound of people eating -- even if they're not chewing with their mouth open, I just don't want to listen to all that mastication. Yuck.

The alert sound from the broken fire alarm when I was at university. Just a 'bleep bleep bleep' noise continuing for over 72 hours...

Birdsong. You may well ask why- after all, birdsong is supposed to be happy and uplifting to the spirit. Well, at 6.00 a.m. its the exact opposite. Every summer, every day a bird lands on my window sill at some hour unknown to man and god alike and sings a joyous song to welcome in the new dawn.

Someday, I'm going to grab that little tweeting bastard and break its neck.

Dishes clanking together.. destroys the nerves. In all my years as a dishwasher, I never got used to it.. I'd get pissed and smash a plate or two just to keep myself together.. the way ceramic plates scream at the slightest jostling is intolerable.
