But it's a great song. One of my favorites.

No,
You must be emo. (http://emosong.ytmnd.com/)

Seriously, no, I hate that song. I like my possessions, and I bet Lennon did too.

Great song.

A Perfect Circle did a fucking awesome remake. I generally hate covers with a passion, but ole Maynard took care of business here.

But yeah... Nice sentiment an all, but it's ever going to happen. People are shitty, and they'll always find something to kill each other over.

I’m sorry, but the mere mention of the most overrated singer/musician ever in the history of mankind makes me want to puke.

So what? You can seriously listen to hypocritical drivel sung in the most nasally voice ever to attempt to sing, and not want to kill something?

I didn't say his singing was good, just his abiltity to write, his music is much better when preformed by other artists (i.e. Jimi Hendrix) but all the "hypocritical drivel" is mainly what I believe in... I'm not forcing it on to you because thats a dickish thing to do, but I'm saying I like him, so meh.

I believe true selflessness comes from the service and helping of others, so I can't really get the point of the song. It looks like he's just doing what people are doing now, blaming the power-base for everything. While I'll admit, I don't agree w/ the policies of the country, I think there will always have to be some form of government. Maybe something like the United Earth Government, w/ a peacekeeping force known as the UN Spacy  ( bit of a joke there ;) ).

Be well!

First of all, it is a great song. By any conventional measure, it's well assembled and, as usual with John Lennon, was expertly executed.

That said, I have some major problems with the song, and they're all eclipsed by the main bit of philosophical idocy:

A world without anything to kill or die for is a world without value. A world without value is a world without life. To me, Lennon seeks a world where humanity is destroyed; since values cannot be stripped away without stripping away life itself. As long as there is a human being alive, at least one value will survive with him, thus rendering Lennon's fantasy a philosophical impossibility.

At least, I hope.

What's hypocritical about Dylan? His songs are mostly just stories. He only wrote the one "protest" song and that just asked a few simple questions.

I mean, come on. Go read the lyrics to the song "Idiot Wind" from Blood on the Tracks and then realise that it was written about Joan Baez for chastising him for *not* being a hippie protest voice.

Nothing hypocritical about him. I'm thinking you've never really listened to his music.

Beautiful sentiments, but definately unrealistic, given human nature. Even Lennon, in the song, admits that "people say that I'm a dreamer."

Thats funny, I had no idea that all of the murders in the world happened based on geopolitics. I mean, I thought that my great uncle wiped out his family and then himself over an impending divorce, and all the while he just did it because of political boundries.
I mean, crappy songs are always right (Can one dispute that she is, indeed, a brick house? I posit that one can not).

And that is exactly why it is correct. The worse a song is, the more truthful it must be, and that is how I know that Republicans and George Bush suck. I also know that Jesus loves me, and that his God doesn't need any money.

When I was hopelessly idealistic I loved it, but now my idealism is tempered with a healthly amount of cynicism, it seems rather cringeworthy. Willy Mason's Oxygen (http://www.lyriczz.com/lyriczz.php?songid=15158) is kind of like a more cynical version of Imagine, especially the second verse ("Do you remember the forgotten America/Justice, equality, freedom to every race/Just need to get past all the lies and hypocrisy/Make-up and hair to the truth behind every face/That look around to all the people you see/How many of them are happy and free?")

a much better song...

Stood still on a highway
I saw a woman
By the side of the road
With a face that i knew like my own
Reflected in my window
Well she walked up to my quarterlight
And she bent down real slow
A fearful pressure paralysed me in my shadow
She said 'son what are you doing here
My fear for you has turned me in my grave'
I said 'mama i come to the valley of the rich
Myself to sell'
She said 'son this is the road to hell'

On your journey cross the wilderness
From the desert to the well
You have strayed upon the motorway to hell

Well i'm standing by a river
But the water doesn't flow
It boils with every poison you can think of
And i'm underneath the streetlight
But the light of joy i know
Scared beyond belief way down in the shadows
And the perverted fear of violence
Chokes the smile on every face
And common sense is ringing out the bellc
This ain't no technological breakdown
Oh no, this is the road to hell

And all the roads jam up with credit
And there's nothing you can do
It's all just bits of paper flying away from you
Oh look out world, take a good look
What comes down here
You must learn this lesson fast and learn it well
This ain't no upwardly mobile freeway
Oh no, this is the road
Said this is the road
This is the road to hell
