Hot Dang--No Yankees, No Red Sox in the World Series!

The final out has been recorded, at least according to CBS Sportsline's webcast of the game, and the Angels have won their division series, eliminating the Yankees.

Thank god.

The Yankees act as though they should be given a slot in the World Series every year, while the Red Sox are still trying to figure out what to do with themselves since they're no longer the woeful, cursed team anymore. Well, they're both home now, and good riddance, say I.

Only one coastal team left--the Angels--and three from the middle of the country, which no doubt causes the ad execs to cry in agony, since all the moneymaking action will be happening away from most of television's largest markets.

So who do you want to see in the World Series, based on these 4 teams? Take the poll.

That's okay. The Yankees made it into the playoffs. I didn't lose my bet. :)

By the way, I don't much care who wins or loses the Series. I'd like to see the Cards and the Sox play in it, because it's so unusual to see the teams with the two best records actually make it all the way, but beyond that, I don't really have a dog in the hunt.

Uhh, Houston's a coastal city...

...Correct me if I'm wrong (which I'm not), but its boundaries stretch from the near-West of Harris County to the shores of Galveston Bay, which has plentiful outlets to the Gulf of Mexico (Galveston Island is the only thing blocking Houston from being right on the Gulf of Mexico).

I knew someone would call me on that, and yet I wrote it anyway, I guess because the Gulf Coast gets no respect. Shame on me, since I was born in Houston and raised in Louisiana. :D

Well, obviously I believe it's the Astros turn, damnit.

All we gotta do is beat Seattle (no problemo!).

Although I'm curious as to why you didn't include Seattle in your poll ... did you forget about them?

And I am LOVING it!! Especially since I am both a White Sox and Astros fan...what I'm rooting for is a 'Stros-Sox World Series, and have it go seven games and end in a TIE!!
Damn, I am loving this!!

Born on the south Side of Chicago, I grew up in comiskey Park, so I'm a lifelong White Sox fan, and have never in my lifetime seen a White Sox pennant...so I'm jazzed!!

I'm even MORE jazzed by the fact that the Skankees-Angels series went five games, I wanted whichever team playing the Sox to come to town all tired, and with no rest! And I got what I wanted. I also got what I wanted since I percieved the Angels to be the weaker team, and I want an easier ride to the pennant...so now I'm double-jazzed!! furthermore, the Skankees have a HISTORY of fucking over the White Sox every time it REALLY mattered! I didn't need that shit hanging over our heads in the ALCS.

We moved, when I was a teenager, to Texas. We moved to Austin. That is where I became an Astros fan. I adopted them as my local team, and kept my allegiance to the White Sox. Couldn't root for the Rangers, since they were in direct competition with the White sox back then (there were only two divisions then, and the Sox and Rangers were both in the Western division back then.)

1986 was a real heart-breaker for me, because of the 16-inning seventh game of the NLCS, may the Mets' hearts be forever black!

Now, it looks to me like the 'Stros are really hungry this year, and they got HEART. Anyone who saw that 18-inning game has to know this now. To come back from being down 6-1 in the final two innings of the game...and then come back to win it...in 18 innings...never giving up, never saying die...hell, Berkman did the grand slam, then Ausmus with the 2-out homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie it...I near went thru the ceiling with joy!!

So now I'm TRIPLE-JAZZED!!

Both my favorite teams in the whole world both got a chance at a pennant! and the 'Stros have never, in their entire franchise history, won a pennant! They came oh-so-close in 1986....
So now...I may get...for the first time in my life...and in the same year...to see BOTH my favorite teams win their first-ever-in-my-lifetime pennants!!

Damn, this is GREAT!!!

Go, White Sox!!! Go, 'Stros!!
Shit, if they end up both in the Series, I'm gonna be happy whichever team wins...although I gotta give a slight edge to the White sox, only because I have been a fan longer...but I'd really root for a tie.

In either case, I'd want a Sox-'Stros series to go seven games!

What a freaking conundrum for me if both my favorite teams get to the Series...but a conundrum I am looking forward to with great anticipation and joy!!

Yay! Baseball season is almost over! All those stupid games will finally stop clogging up sportscenter and we can get down to America's TRUE favorite pastime... the NFL!

Football fucking sucks!! God, I am never happier than the day after the Pro Bowl, when I finally know that goddamn football is over for the next six months!

Goddamn sports radio up here...I had to leave home in the middle of the Astros game the other day...I bowl on a league...and on my way to the bowling alley...this goddamn sprots radio is talking about FUCKING HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL when the game I'm biting my fingernails over is on, and I'm going CRAZY not being able to listen to it!

Finally, I managed to pick up another AM station that WAS broadcasting the game, but it wasn't coming in too well...but it was good enough for me to know that it was still tied.

Got to the bowling alley at the top of the 15th, and BEGGED the bowling center to turn on FOX so I could watch the game...

And then, Burke belted that homer in the bottom of the 18th!! I was so happy I proceeded to get two strikes in a row! "THAT," said I, "is how you celebrate a 'Stros victory!!"

Finished out that game with a 145, which is 24 pins over my average. Woulda been a better game, too, but I could only half-concentrate on the bowling, because I was constantly monitoring the game...even while I was up on the boards....kept getting a lot of splits as a result!

Seattle?
Don't you mean ST. LOUIS????

And, don't think they are gonna be a pushover. They won't be.

But I still think the 'Stros are gonna do it.

Go Angles!

Screw the Angels!!
I rooted for you guys, only because I wanted y'all to take out the hated Skankees for me. You guys served your purpose...you may go home now. that pennant belongs in CHICAGO!!!

I wanted y'all to have to go five games, because now you guys get no rest, and have to play the White Sox when you are tired and used up...ha ha ha ha ha!!!

I want the easy route to the pennant, and I thank your Angels for providing it to us.

Now, if only, dammit, the Padres coulda knocked off the Cards for us!!

Still waiting for an answer to this.

From Wikipedia:

The "World" appellation has stuck despite the fact that only teams in the two major leagues, which happen to cover only the United States and Canada, actually participate. At the time the term was first used, baseball at the major league level was only played in the United States. While some would contend that there is no reason to believe that the World Series winner is a significantly better team than any club team outside Major League Baseball, no challenges have been made by other leagues. Moreover, virtually all of the best international players--from the Pacific Rim, Latin America, the Caribbean, and elsewhere--play on major-league rosters, with the notable exception of Cuban nationals.

The World Series winners have occasionally played winter exhibition series against the best players of other leagues around the world, such as Japan. Sometimes the Japanese have gained the upper hand in those series, but since they are only exhibitions, their results cannot be regarded as conclusive. Attempts to pit the North American champions against champions in the Japanese or Latin American leagues in a truly meaningful way have, so far, not succeeded.

A persistent myth is that the "World" in "World Series" came about because the New York World newspaper sponsored it. Baseball researcher Doug Pappas refutes that claim, demonstrating a linear progression from the phrase "World's Championship Series" (used to describe the 1903 series as well as some of the 19th century post-season series) to "World's Series" (a term first used in the 1880s and which persisted for decades) to "World Series". Furthermore, investigation of the New York World for the relevant years revealed no evidence of the supposed sponsorship. (For details, see Mr. Pappas' web page on the subject).

In deference to any controversy, more and more the term "World Series Championship" is being used, the subtlety being that it is merely a title and not a political statement. Thus the term has come full circle from the original "World's Championship Series".

Well, I'm a Cubs fan.. but I guess I don't really hate the Sox or anything.. so I'm wishing them luck. I was born on the South Side anyway, so I guess it's okay.. I also naturally hate the Cardinals.. so I'd like to see Sox/Astros.
