Will the US Justice Department's new anti-obscenity obsession ban my DVD collection?

You stupid fucking ****. You, Williamson, I'm talking to you, shithead. You just cost me $6,000. Six thousand dollars, and one Cadillac. That's right. What are you going to do about it? What are you going to do about it, asshole? You're fucking shit. Where did you learn your trade, you stupid fucking ****, you idiot? Who ever told you that you could work with men? Oh, I'm gonna have your job, shithead.

The above was a quote from Glengarry Glen Ross. It's part of an exchange between Al Pacino and Kevin Spacy that includes copious ammounts of foul language. Recently the Justice Department closed down a website containing erotic stories. Just words, no pictures. Are movies next? Will the Justice department end up banning all movies that aren't boring disney crap? Before you say it could never happen, think for a minute. Did you ever think they could shut down a website just for publishing stories?

Do they even have that kind of power?

I'm not sure they would raid people's homes for having movies that offend their puritan sensibilities, but they could concievably prevent the release of new films and ban the sale of old films that they brand as obscene.

I don't live in the US… but would this "obscenity" conceivably be applied to violent films as well? 'Cos I love those. :)

The thought police can do anything!

And violence in America is a-ok, just no cursing or nudity.

No. American conservatives hate sex and foul language, but they love violence. The bloodier, the better.

Why on earth would they ever do that? Cracking down on some forms of porn where those starring are being abused in some way (Either forced or under 18s involved) I can understand, but there's no suffering involved in the production of erotic stories.

Except sometimes on behalf of the beta readers

(As somebody who's very often been twisted into reading test chapters of friends' crappy fanfiction, though not erotic, I stand wholeheartedly by this statement.)

Well, someone has to suffer for the art- why must it be the artist? ;)

No, they can't; considering it would be ex post facto. Unless of course you brought this DVD after they instituted this new policy.

I wonder if they have considered that by banning stuff in increasingly desparate attempts to appease the Christian right, they are killing large sections of the economy?

I have this to say -

Um... and while you're at it big guy, protect my pronography too, K? :p

I'm only half joking. If there was a just and loving God Gore would be on his second term and none of this using the FBI as Morality Police shit would have ever happened. But since it has, refer to image above, and pray.
