Hardwood or carpet?

Okay, the sodden carpeting is coming up in our house.

We're taking this opportunity to contemplate some changes. One which we're discussing is the pros and cons of carpeting vs. hardwood floors.

Neither of us have chosen a side as we each like and dislike certain details of both.

WHy can't there be a happy medium? :(

Mud and bodily fluids clean up easier on hardwood floors.

I like carpet. Hardwood is very loud, all the klumping every time you take a step. It might be easier to maintain, but it's also cold for bare feet, and that's bad in winter. I don't think it looks as nice as carpet, also.

Go with carpet

Indeed they do. A definite plus for hardwood. Then again, have you ever been tackled on oak floors? :(

Because a hardwood carpet would be uncomfortable.

Go with the wood flooring. If you had carpet before, you'll really appreciate how beautiful it is. For a while. :)

Hardwood flooring is naturally beautiful and adds more worth to your home's value. Carpeting starts looking tacky from wear and tear after a few years, colors and textures go out of style, and it is a collector of dirt, bacteria and evil smells that no amount of cleaning will completely get rid of. Carpet pads can be a source of vile nightmares. Have you thought of one of the new wood laminate floors?

Hardwood. Much better looking. If you have anybody with allergies then hardwood for sure.

I ripped out all carpeting to find a nice hardwood floor underneath.

By an amazing coincidence, I'm looking at it right now. :p

Yes, I have
But I would raise two notions:

1. stiff-arm, and spin.
2. Getting tackled onto a hardwood floor does not result in the inevitable rug-burns.

Aro knows all and sees all. Seriously, the better laminate floors look exactly like hardwood without all the filling, sealing, and waxing issues. You also wouldn't have the dust coming from between the boards problem that occurs with hardwoods.

cause you cant fit carpet into a washer, and carpet is very unsanitary after a year or so. even if you steam clean your carpets, they are still a dirt magnet and they can hold things like lice, flees, bacteria, tiny shards of broken glass that end up in your foot,etc....

and anyone who puts carpet in the kitchen, dining room,or bathroom is an idiot. i cant tell you how many houses i have seen like this.

kitchen: grease,food spills,dishwater

dining room: foodspills,drink stains

bathroom: shower steam, toilet overflows, sink water, wet after a shower, piss that misses the target and ends up in the carpet

(i have kids... ;)

also,it would seem to be common sense to use DARK carpet in rooms with entry ways, but people always use colors like CREAM....

AAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!

Harwood. In Poland they don't have carpet floors, because carpet floors are a joke! you wand a carpet, go to the store, and buy one, aand then place it in the middle of the room. Do americans rally find that such a hard thing to do??

o.O

I've never seen a carpeted bathroom or kitchen. OK, a carpeted kitchen once, but it was in a two-room apartment, so that's excusable. Never a bathroom though. That's just...ew.

Nah, but nice carpeting, is..well..nice.

Nice soft carpeting...good to flop on and watch tv, or wrestle with the dog...hardwood floors can sometimes be uncomfortable to lay on.

I have seeen many houses in the world that had carpet floors in all rooms, including the dining room, kitchen, and washrooms. What morons!

If you want carpeting, getting a hardwood floor, and then putting a carpet on the hardwood floor is the way to go.

Carpeting can be summed up with one word. "NASTY!" Especially if you have kids and pets and all their accompanying messes. Give me something I can damp mop with a good anti-bacterial.

There are some very nice fake hardwood floors that go in fairly easy, look nice and some even have a cushion underneath that has some give to it. I put some in my basement hallway. It looks very good.

Area rugs over hardwood.

Easier to maintain, and no cold tootsies on winter mornings.

I don't know -- can't the Polish figure out how to make the carpets reach from wall to wall? Do they really find that such a hard thing to do?[/sarcasm]

I'm going to go for hardwood with rugs.

And our house has a carpeted bathroom. But that's just 'cause my parents were too lazy to change it when we moved in :p

Pleather. Who wouldn't want Pleather floors? It'd be like some kind of whore-house chic....or something.

But seriously, this summer I helped my parents build their retirement home and they used wood laminate flloring. It looks great, its cheaper than real hardwood and you can install it yourself.

Laminate wood-flooring. Installed it in my house a few months back, after over 4 years of nasty carpet. You really can't get the spills out of carpet.

And we love rugs, huge area rugs.

Got stone tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Now all rooms are easier to clean. And the smaller rugs go into the washing machine. Yay! :D

Hardwood floors, definitely! When I went searching for my apartment I looked for hardwood floors, it was a must have.

I've lived with both, and hardwood looked better after the wear and tear of parties/pets/heels/general running about and it wasn't near as dirty as a carpet would have been. On the other hand, my dog prefers the carpet to lay on, so I got him a big Flokati rug (which I have to admit is amazing to lay on as well, especially when it comes to having to study for hours on end....nice place to do so :) ). Hardwood is easier to "match" furniture with as well, and a rug can easily be changed where as carpet takes a bit more effort.

Need I also remind, Lunatic Goofballs, of the fun to be had with area rugs that haven't any rubberized backing + hardwood floors?

Get a good running start, jump on area rug, and hallway surf. ;)
