I'm going to Philadelphia with my mom later today and I want to go shopping here (http://readingterminalmarket.org/index.php) but I have to walk there, yadda yadda.. is that a far walk for a big city? Or is it better to drive/take the bus? I dont feel like getting lost on a monday morning in a city of that size.. *puppy eyes* gimme your advice, k?

No, I walked around all of London once, North of the Thames. That was after getting on the wrong trolly though! :p

Don't worry about it, just keep asking random people where stuff is if you get lost. "Keep" is the key word here. Like every two minutes.

It's less than a mile. Don't be lazy :P

Jeez man, it's not even 1.5 miles round trip.

As long as the route doesn't go through any "bad" neighborhoods, I think you'll be fine walking. :)

It looks to be a bit under 3 km (can't tell it in miles - i stem from Europe :) ).It should mean about an hour, an hour and a half tops.

Nonono - it's about 15 minutes each way, if you walk really slowly...
(it's about 2.7km for the round trip.)

Well, I prepared him/her for the "worst": better early than late.

Cool, what brings you to Philly? That's where I live. That's not far. The center city area is set up so you can walk everywhere. That's what is great about Philly. Though if you are not used to walking you can take buses, subways, or trollys. What you suggest isn't far to walk, even if you aren't used to walking.

The area is safe. That's around the touristy area of the city and is part of the downtown area. The blocks are very short takes between 1 and 2 minutes to walk across a block. As always don't take shortcuts down dark allies.

I think I can walk that in less then 15 minutes, but I walk fast.

Kew, gram needs to get her knee checked up at the hospital, so im tagging along. I love philly too, specialy center city, south street and antuqiue row. I was in philly the last week of filming for "real world" and me, being the person who goes crazy when on location of a tv filming, I went to the house (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/philly/f21c54c5.jpg) (which was next to a starbucks :D)took some pics (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y79/Goomg/philly/Picture029.jpg) and went to starbucks, found a really cool shop down the street. Sorry if im going off topic.. havent got any sleep *chugs goya esspresso*

Oh one more piece of advice. There are signs all over on the street corners that say "Walk Philadelphia." They have maps on them if you get lost.

Since you told me why you are in town. I'm here because I'm working on my PhD at the University of Pennsylvania.

...that round trip is less than the distance I walk to most of my lectures. Is Philly hilly? If so you'll get some good exercise on that walk if you do it often :)

It's a shame Philly's flat. "Hilly Philly" sounds nice. However, I know the feeling, Bleenie, so I'm on the Special K diet at the moment and walking absolutely everywhere all the time :)

Piece of cake... print a copy, check the weather forecasts, and enjoy the walk. Knowing nothing about the city but the map, though, I'd take 10th past the university, and market st. through the galleries rather than the suggested (usually driving) route.

Maybe look around http://www.philadelphia.com/attractions/ and similar sites for other ideas?

Are you a fan of Temple? Did you go there?

Depends on what you want to do. There are lots of good resturants on South Street. You might find some interesting shops there as well. There are some interesting shops throughout the Old City area. There is all the touristy stuff: The Constitution Center, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, City Hall (great view of the city), The Art Museum, The Franklin Institute (Science museum).

You can also take one of those bus tours. Ride the Ducks (goes in the water but not sure if they are still doing it, they stop sometime in fall). They also have the double decker bus tours.

Reading Terminal market is intersting. It has lots of good candy and food. It also has unique things you can buy.

Oh, there is a medical odities museum: The Mutter Museum. It's a little west then the rest of the stuff. It can be kind of gross, but the explanations of things are kind of neat.

I wouldn't drive anywhere. I would take buses or walk. Parking is a real problem. There are buses that take you to most of the touristy stuff.

Almost forgot the Archeology museum at Penn.
