Anybody been involved in Model UN?
Its funny because it seems like the UN part of NS was made for people who are in it. I was in it last year at my college, and I attended the conferences here in Chicago and I was lucky enough to go to New York for nationals. We actually got to sit at Morocco (our country) in the General Assembly all day as we voted on resolutions from our committee's. I never thought practicing resolution writing would come in handy lol
Anyone else been in model un? In high school or college?

Middle school, actually, while in the GATE program(Gifted and Talented Education). 7th and 8th grade, where both years, I recieved personal commendations. Was Cuba in 7th, and France in 8th.
I was pretty smart as Cuba. Quickly made friends with France and Russia :)
EDIT: I was in the World Heath Organization, tho, which didn't really help me... looking back, I wish I had been UNSC...

Was every single resolution passed like on here? Lol god I hate that...its like everyone just clicks FOR without reading it. I mean come on a resolution passes....then one week later everyone votes to get rid of it!!! That right there is proof that everyone just clicks FOR...
I was, but I quit mid-year and went to another school, so I didn't get to do much.

in the U.K we have student council which is just like the U.N only without the power or the voting (we just suggest stuff for our school :( )
alas I'm not allowed in it though because I'm too naughty
But anyway what is it like? a club?

Ohhh... I did model UN! I was Saudi Arabia.
I managed to get America to fund a giant pipline to carry oil from Saudi Arabia directly to America.
Foolish Americans... :D

LOL No not for me. Acutally it was like the real UN... a WHOLE LOT of talking and NO action. In Chicago (I was on legal (6th) committee for both conferences) we delt with international terrorism... in New York it was rules of land warfare etc... So you can imagine the debates that we had out. I (morocco) had a fantastic draft together with Ukraine and Mozambique, which failed at the last moment.
What an awesome experience though... anyone who hasn't done it.. RUN dont walk to the model UN faculty advisor and get involved. Its fun as hell.

Ours was awesome fun. We were Morocco, so we took a stuffed camel as a mascot. By the end of the conference, it had been the subject of a food-drive resolution, involved in a terrorist plot, and used to declare war on the UK for being chavs. We also got a resolution passed about global warming that contained the amendment: ['I]'in the event of sea-level rise, everyone should come live in Kazakhstan, as it is high and we will fun and we have many goats'[/I]. The debating/politics was also quite interesting.

Best MUN I've been to is LIMUN at the LSE. Never fails to impress.
I went to NMUN 2004, but it sucked. Too many Americans living up to their stereotypes. Cooperation was virtually impossible, and the social scene was virtually non-existent. At least LSE put on a boat party along the Thames. My university paid all the expenses, but I wouldn't have gone to the trouble if I had had to pay.

I was Pakistan. Being in between the pro-US coalition and the pro-Middle East coalition on the issue of light arms trade was fun...I was the go between guy.
Never heard of it outside of a Simpsons episode.

I'm currently in it, and am right now (putting off) writing an essay for it.
I haven't been to any conferences, so no funny stories, although hopefully I'll go to the Harvard on this fall (that's what this essay is for, to see who goes).

The AMUN conference in Chicago is the BEST overall conference, very well organized, great home government services etc... And the city... well, I live in Chicago so nottin' new for me :)
But I agree with you about NMUN... 2005 was no different, the conference itself sucked. Horrible organization etc... but being in New York and at the actual UN, wow was that a treat.
I think the most fun I had at both conferences was sitting in the hotel lounge with new friends... debating politics, drinking gin&tonics and smoking fat cigars
