Well, my spy network is still in it's nascent stages (so far, all I've recruited is the homless guy in the neighborhood. He's enthusiastic, but he's horrible at backing up his sources and doing background work. The voices in his head do seem to be remarkably accurate though.)

The chain of command is clear-cut and efficient (homeless guy ----> me,) with a minimum of waste and overlap.

Overall, I'd give my intelligence service a B-.

Therefore, to comply with the "honesty" rule, I decided the last option would best describe a person like me. On top of that, I actually believe that IQ tests count for something other than the inflation of the collective egos of a bunch of little white children. Only if you assume that the 1-10 rating is on a linear scale. For myself, I'm somewhere around 140 -- based on a whole collection of IQ tests at various times rating me anywhere from 105 or so up to about 180, but mostly in the 140 range. The middle ones are the ones I believe. I rated myself smart but not genius -- genius I view as an extraordinarily restricted term for well below 1% of the population, and based not solely on an IQ level, but at least as much on what a person does with that intelligence. It's not all about a few lucky genes. If you rated yourself a genius and expect me to believe you in any way shape or form, you'd better have a lot more amazing accomplishments to show for it than 'A's on high school tests without studying (yeah I did that too) and a very high IQ score.

Hmmm...

I don't really rate my own intelligence. It simply is not something that matters to me; my "intelligence" is only judged one way or the other by how other people see me. I'm sure every different person has their own opinions on what might make me intelligent or moronic - and these don't affect me one way or the other.

I've never taken an official intelligence test, but I did take a career aptitude test back in high school that placed me in the top 0-2% for linguistic skills and the top 5-10% for mathematical skills. That doesn't measure wisdom or common sense, though. ;)

I put genius, but I'm not sure if I technically am. I haven't gotten an IQ test since I was in elementry school. I know most of my friends are considered near genius or genius and that most of them consider me smarter then them (but that doesn't necessarly mean I have a higher IQ). I don't put a lot of value in IQ tests. If the person seems intelligent I put more value in that then IQ. IQ tests are simply designed to give high IQs to those who seem intelligent anyway, its not like there is an objective standard. I just mention IQ tests because thats how genius is usually defined.

For the dsylexics out there I'm pretty sure I'm dyslexic as well. I've never been diagnosed. But I have horrible time spelling and get "b" and "p" mixed up. I was also in remidial reading classes and speach therapy in elementry school. I had several symptoms of dyslexia but they were too ignorant to be able to diagnosis it. They were able to diagnosis it in my sister, but that was after we moved to a new school system. The school said I was dumb and I felt dumb so didn't try in school. Then they had me take random tests when going into middle school and told me I was smart and wanted to put me in advanced classes. So the same school can't decide if I'm a moron or if I'm smart. They wanted to switch me directly from remidial to advanced classes. Now I'm in graduate school and doing pretty well. I've learned to deal with it on my own. I read slow, but am smarter then most and can compensate for that.

Anyway, the whole thing makes me bitter when I hear people braging about intelligence. When I was little I was teased for being dumb. Then when I got older I was picked on for being too smart. The only thing I care about is if the person uses the intelligence they were given or not.

Well I posted myself as middling. A lot of you said stuff about school. I am a final year chemist student. I saw more smart/genius people drop out of our course then the average people. Anyone worth their salt knows intelligence gives you nothing, it comes down to good old hard work. Even a average person like me can get one of the more difficult degrees on offer with persistence. But a smart gains nothing if they don't try. I found the posts interesting but care little about how smart some one is. I even go so far to act stupid sometimes because its more fun then to be an intelligent aritocrat.

Genius.

Was tested and retested in me youth.

However, I dont l've never liked talking about it.
Especially around some of my friends who are very intelligent, but not geniuses. Sometimes, when the subject came up, and Ive given the answer, people look at you differently, or think youre being arrogant.

Others expect the same kind of results or accomplishments that some famous genuises.
Einstein, or Fermi, or Edison...or some craziness.

I can tell you now, I am never in my life, going to achieve any kind of similar discovery, or scientific breakthough.
Maybe if I had been born with more ambition, or a gift for science.

Sadly, the most common reactions to someone finding out that youre a genius, is envy, or disdain.

"Well, if youre so smart, why arent you rich?"

Becuase intelligence does not require ambition, or greed.

I can tell you this...

You guys are being too modest.

From a google search a lot of people define Genius as an IQ greater then 140, but most of the more legitamate sources don't want to make such a simple deffinition for it. I think thats about 0.5% and near genius is about 1%. So it's not hard to be a genius. If you take 200 random people and you tend to be the smartest of them then you are probably a genius.
BackwoodsSquatches
09-10-2005, 12:40
Also, for the people who are confused as to what score a genius level IQ, is:

Over 140 - Genius or near genius

120 - 140 - Very superior intelligence

110 - 119 - Superior intelligence

90 - 109 - Normal or average intelligence

80 - 89 - Dullness

70 - 79 - Borderline deficiency

Under 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness

Normal Distribution & IQ Scores
The properties of the normal distribution apply to IQ scores:

50% of IQ scores fall between 90 and 110

70% of IQ scores fall between 85 and 115

95% of IQ scores fall between 70 and 130

99.5% of IQ scores fall between 60 and 140

Einstein was considered to have an IQ of @ 160.

We won free beer (which I don't drink). I play them mostly with geniuses and near geniuses, so maybe thats why I feel like I'm bad at them. IQ goes on a bell curve. 85 to 115 is pretty much everyone, and the higher or lower you go, the less people are like you or higher.

160 is 0.05% of the population, and 140-od must be about 1-2% at most.

By the way, i took a Mensa home test, got a good enough score to get to a supervised test and got an IQ of 160.

But IQ isn't smarts. Smarts is logic and reasoning, plus mathematical stuff, plus your grasp of your native tongue, times common sense.

so i've got a score like this: Ultra mega genius + very very good + amazing times nothing.

It's well known that geeks lack common sense and assume that getting a girl works 1 in 20 times, because they rolled a natural 20 on their change attitude roll.

We forget our charisma scores when not near other geeks is 2. that's bad.

Back wood. You say you claim to be a genius but say you'll never achieve some great breakthrough. So why call yourself a genius. From what you say your an intelligent person but will never be a genius. Genius eg. Einstein or Newton etc..
Were not overly smart people. Einstein did not have an IQ of 160 and was in fact an undiagnosed dyslexic for a large part of his life. Einstein had to do a lot of work for his theories and this is why I would call him a Genius. Most "genius" from history are very average people who worked hard for their findings. I think the testers should maybe re evaluate what they would define as genius.

Its simply a better way to say "way, way, above average intelligence."

I've just moved to Belgium and I'm in a French-speaking school. French is an easy subject for me, but usually I'd just be able to sit back and pick everything up as I go along but the math is completely different and trying to learn about the feudal system in French is NO JOKE. But I'm going back to Ireland next year and this is just my transition year, so if i get terrible results I don't really care (a revelation for me, as I always seem to be in competition with myself  ). I love how everyone has an IQ of 140. Online IQ tests are not reliable.

Hell, no IQ tests are reliable. It doesn't even measure how smart you are, it just measures how quickly your brain works. You can have a very high IQ and still be stupid.

I didn't vote, but I looked at the results, and I love how 31 people put genius. A genius discovers a new way of looking at the world. A genius is brilliant, creative, and hard working. A genius invents penicillin. A genius discovers the fundamental laws of the univers. When one of you supposed geniuses discovers a new way to treat cancer, let me know.

I'm very smart (but I have more than some online IQ test score to back it up). I routinely score in the 99th percentile on standardized tests. I'm taking the SATs in March, and so I don't have definite scores right now, I'm one of the people that could possibly get a 2400 perfect score (there's a little bit of luck involved). Most likely I will get an 800 on the math, high 700s on the writing, and mid 700s on the verbal. For foreigners who don't know what this means, basically the average for any one section is about 500, with a standard deviation of 100. So 2.5% of people score 700 or better in each section, and about .1% get an 800.

the problem i've found of having half-decent intelligence is many things are incredibly easy and i can just understand/learn em straight off, no effort - like (especially) economics (got 99.6% in A level exams etc, didn't do a jot of work for 2 years). but the problem is that has made me so very lazy in things that don't come so easily - like maths. in school i could get around that by just concentrating and choosing the subjects that i could do with no effort, but that laziness (and lack of maths ability) has come back to haunt me now i'm not in school. i'm having to learn how to push myself because i never have had to :(

anyone else find anything similar?

oh, hell yes. I always leave essays to the last minute...and as such get worse marks than I rightfully should.

I mean...I can get distinctions and the odd high distinction by writing essays on the very day that they're due and handing them in 10 mins before the deadline...I can only wonder what a little motivation would do.

I am a complete idiot, so much so, that I read Harry Potter and listen to Greenday. I also occasionally write in leetspeak, and ascribe to anarchism as a political ideology.
Therefore, to comply with the "honesty" rule, I decided the last option would best describe a person like me. On top of that, I actually believe that IQ tests count for something other than the inflation of the collective egos of a bunch of little white children. In schools where the "gifted classes" is a euphemism for segregation.

I'm usually a modest person but... in accordance to my age - I'd have to say 'Genius'.

I am amazingly intelligent. When I took the IQ test, the computer exploded trying to calculate my score.

I am very smart in math, literature, humanities, and everything except the sciences. In addition, I have a good sense of direction and a lot of common sense.

Sadly, that's caused me to be ostracized everywhere, but that's the price you pay I guess. I prefer intelligence to popularity.

I'm also extremely modest. ;) Naah, I'd better be honest with myself. I'm egotistical and conceited as all hell. I'd rate myself a 10 for egotism and a 9.999999r for intelligence. ;)

I'd like to think genius but since my IQ score is 138, I'll have to say "smart" :)

Well, if you are that close I'm sure if you took it enough times you could get a genius score. Not that it means anything. You won't really be smarter, but you could walk around telling everyone your a genius and alienate yourself due to a bloted ego.

I've spent far too much time trying to take on the mantle of intelligence, wanting the benefit of its appearance.

Instead, I find that I should have spent that time developing whatever native intelligence I have, and to train myself in its purposeful use.

I hope I'm not to old to make this correction.

For me, studying (engineering, university) is much like a minor hobby, need to study 0-3 h a day to achieve the same results as many do with a normal workday. I typically remember most things from the yesterday's class, while hoi polloi forgets most and needs extensive repetetion and rehearsal. And this university has one of the highest entrance criteria in the country. I also tend to do homework in class, because it doesn't interfere with following the lecturer. So, from genius to smart.

To compensate, I'm teh lazy, and that's why I didn't select "genius". I'd be a top student if I was diligent, too.

I don't do any of the stuff geniuses do, like painting, or listening to classical music.
Huh? What's up with this classical music? It doesn't sound very genius-like, being disconcertingly rhythmless and simple.
