If you haven't downloaded Skype yet, I really recommend it. You can talk to either individuals or groups online at no charge. It works great! :)

My name on Skype (http://www.skype.com/helloagain.html), for any who're interested, is ForrestHorn.

I've been using TeamSpeak for years before this Skype fad, and the nerd purist in me wished to reject such fripperies...

...And yet, sending out TS server IPs to people every month sucks so much, I've decided to give it a go. :)

All you really need is a mic and speakers. Or just speakers to listen to the other person.

Then you can listen to a conference call between a bunch of other people. And listen to weird conversations and waste even more time! yay!

No way man, TeamSpeak 4evr.. yeah.. no better way to co-ordinate a game of Starcraft or Tribes than TeamSpeak. (Honestly, I think I win more often shutting up, but it gives you something to do. :) )

Skype and TeamSpeak are two completely different things. Skype is for simple conversation and TeamSpeak is VoIP for games without it.

TS is in many ways superior...

- Repeat use of same server
- Unnoticably low usage of system resources
- Ability to alter compression codec
- Push to talk
- No upper limit on number of people in a channel, except that imposed by the server
- Ability to group and switch groups on server

However, you cannot dial a real phone number, and the austere interface is 'user-friendly' in an online gamer sense, not a 'rest of the family' sense. IP-based login and server registration methods, for example. Plus many of the features, such as the Channel Commander commands, are only needed for hierachical military organisation.

Skype would be much improved if they fixed the system resource and memory leak issues, and added push-to-talk and a choice of compression codecs. Basically, meet TS half-way and get rid of some of the fat. A change that would be really awesome, is the ability to set up and register a semi-permanent 'space' on the Skype network, so if they so chose, members could always go to the same place. At the moment it is so decentralised, there is no way I can see of building a proper community on it.

Anyway, just my thoughts. :)

I dunno.. I've had plenty of simple conversations on TeamSpeak, considering that 90% of the time I spend on it is spent *waiting* for people to show up for games, rather than playing them. You can also record conversations and put passwords on servers.. I haven't tried Skype yet though, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. I just ain't switchin'. :)

I used TS for quite a bit when I was in a CoD clan. I'm not too good when it comes to speaking though... I tend to say.... nothing.

Don't have Skype, either, though. And I don't wanna plug in the mic.

Skype's awesome. It has much better quality than TeamSpeak but I find games run slower with Skype in the background than TS so I still use TS for gaming.

Actually, I find TS to have far better sound quality than Skype. You need to rent a TS server, not use a free one, and adjust codec for number of people in channel. Works fine that way for me.

And yeah, system-resource-wise, Skype is uber-bloatware.

Yeah... that would probably help. I've used my clan's TS server and it seemed worse than Skype. Do you have a fairly outdated computer? My friend and I talk on Skype a lot and the sound quality is very good, much better than a telephone. Perhaps sound quality is more dependent on the server for TS and more dependent on the computers involved for Skype?

My computer is a 1.5GHz P4 512MB RAM, running WinXP SP2, with a 2 meg ADSL connection. It handles the online game EVE perfectly fine, with TS running and WinAmp broadcasting internet radio at the same time.

Skype though, gave me such a memory leak, I ended up seeing every process lagged so much, I had to shut down.
