"If I were President..."

Lewrockwellia

Suppose you were placed in charge of your country and were its sole ruler, without a congress/parliament, or whatever. You- and only you- were 100% responsible for all major political decisions, from international relations to defense to welfare to everything else. So: How would you run your country?

I'd have regulated capitalism, totally secular government, basic healthcare would be paid for by the state, welfare would be offered to all eligible citizens so long as they train for a new job and seek employment while they recieve payments. I'd also keep a strong military.

Sorry, but come on--that's a pretty wide ranging question, and an impossible one to answer. Besides, isn't that the whole idea behind this little game?

wow.... sounds more like a dictator..... anyway, the first thing i'd do is order the contruction of a giant statue of myself made entirely of cheese as well as refusing to use protectionism in trade and not give bilateral aid, but rather give it to various, small non-profit aid organisations to deal with

Everyone would be able to do whatever the fuck they want as long as it isn't hurting someone else. That would be my main policy. Those who attempt to destroy that would be punished at the FULLEST extent of the law if found guilty.

I'd say I would do virtually the same thing, except for the strong military.

I would keep a small, albeit well-trained and well-equipped force. I see no need for a powerful military if I can get backing from other major powers(thanks to diplomacy) if the need should arise.

i would ensure heathcare and education for all citizens. While you are a child you are the states responsibility and the state will give you the best education and stuff. When you are an adult you will be able to make informed decisions yourself and you can look after yourself. If you find yourself unemployed the government will help you find a new job (benefits will only been given to people who cant work fullstop). If somebody refuse to get a job (ie tramps) they'll be forced into the armed services. My main priorities would be the economy, liberty, military, education and welfare. I would place a heavy emphasis on individualism as opposed to collectivism. As soon as you hit 18 the government will only help you out if you desperatly need it. You should be able to take care of matters yourself whenever possible (thats why the government invests so much into education when your younger, so you will mature into a independant adult)

well it seems nice on paper anyway...

Well I'm not so good at diplomacy, so I'll just have to blow shit up.

I would:

1.End all social welfare programs, Social Security, government-supported healthcare, food stamps, subsidized housing, etc. (except for veterans' benefits programs)
2.End all corporate welfare
3.Abolish all tariffs
4.Reduce the current defense budget to about 5% of what it is now
5.End government funding for science and the arts
6.Scrap all foreign aid programs, bring all our troops home from every country, and abandon all our foreign military bases
7.Repeal all drug laws
8.Abolish the Department of Education and leave education up to the states and private individuals
9.Allow the states to decide their own policies for abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage, civil rights, death penalty, etc.
10.Leave all crime control up to the individual states
11.Declare all gun control laws null and void
12.Abolish the income tax
13.Abolish the Federal Reserve and return to the gold standard
14.Abolish the Department of Energy
15.Abolish all antitrust laws, remove all business regulations, get rid of minimum wage laws, etc.
16.Pursue a 100% neutral, peaceful foreign policy
17.Repeal all censorship laws and ensure that free speech is vehemently protected, to the fullest extent possible
18.Repeal the 17th Amendment
19.Repeal the 14th Amendment, as it abridges on states' rights
20.Break the two-party duopoly on power, so third parties (whether left-wing or right-wing) would have just as great a say and just as much influence as do the Republican and Democratic parties
21.Privatize and sell all land owned by the federal government to private individuals
22.Destroy all our nuclear weapons, but only if other countries were to do the same
23.Radically slash government spending in all areas
24.Abolish all Departments except for Defense, State, and Treasury, each of which would only receive 1% as much funding as it does now (except Defense, which would receive 5% as much)

That makes more sense than Lewrockwellia's manifesto in the post above does. I knew I was missing something in mine--it was the beer. But I will have beer everyday! So my country is superior! HaHa! :D

I'd immediately resign and put in charge 10 people, each who scored exactly 0.00 and 0.00 on the www.politicalcompass.org test. Centrism rules, baby!

I'd spend billions on monuments and various self-aggrandizing posters, statues, etc. From there, it would just be an old-school pure capitalist dictatorship.

Good program. Only additions I can think of offhand is that 22 is void (the others won't follow) so you might want to think of going unilateral, and you might want to add sound money (100% gold standard?)and (unless I missed that) remove all protectionist measures.

Thanks. Removing protectionist measures is covered under 2 and 3.

have a technocratic revolution of course other than that:

1) keep the Royal family

2) stop relying on America's army and finally begin spending a good amount of cash on ours

3) try to make E.U a nation

4) try to get Russia to join the E.U

5) pump funds into science and education

6) more emphasis on collectivism

7) more money to sports programmes

8) buy America's debt then when they can't pay it back buy the country

9) use rehab wherever possible in prisons and have sentences last until a board psychologist thinks there cured

oh yes and cancel Christmas :p

To be honest, I concur with much of what Lewrockwellia propsoes, however, as a Britain, I am compelled to disregard some specifically American relating proposals. Personally, however, I would:

-privatise the NHS and all related services
-embark upon a program of modernisation in all remaining public services
-ensure that all current prison internment periods are doubled, and all according sentences mandatory in maximum duration.
-Deport all immigrants or citizens deemed, by both a council and examination pertinent to all necessary capacities, from Britain and to their last residence.
-Reduce all income tax to a flat rate of between 5 and 10%.
-Utilise finances vacated by the NHS to subsidise all university education.
-Raise the mandatory school attendance age to 18.
-Re-introduce the death penalty, by firing squad or hanging, naturally, for murder, rape, and any terrorist related activity.
-Afford every citizen the right to possess and utilise firearms, whilst introducing education and training programs in school to ensure their appropriate use.
-Withdraw British forces from all extraneous occupation, and re-colonise those third world nations reliant upon financial aid witht eh liberated troops.
- Attempt to procure a unified, federal Europe to counter the economic and political influence of the USA, China and India.
