Whats wrong with Canada?

As a Canadian, I take a lot of crap online just because of where I come from. It seems everyone likes taking pot-shots at Canada. But why?
We're economically successful and not just because of our neighbours (Just because two successful countries are side by side doesn't mean they are parasitic), we've got a great history and we've never lost a war (and have fought in many!), our people and culture are great (yes, Canadians do have a distinctive culture). So what gives? We're making our own milestones here, and we're our own people. Why so much flack for being Canadian?

Probably not, they just like stirring it a little to scare up the government every now and then, but a lot has changed in the last decade and Quebecers are starting to see themselves more like Canadians.
God knows they should, we give the damned French province extra money and a political monopoly...

Fass is correct as usual. Most people in fact do like Canada. It's just some in the US that seem to have a real problem with that lovely nation of the North. It's just jealousy of National Healthcare, cooler weather, less rednecks, looser marijuanna laws, lower crime and politicians that don't entirely suck methinks. ;)

Speaking as a Quebecer (or as i like to make fun Queerbecer), I'd like to say for one thing, we never left Canada. Nor is it likely that we will leave you guys. But truth is, what is Canada without Quebec? About like 1/4 of the population is situated on the windsor/quebec city axis. We're not the worst drivers because we drink.. Alcohol here is heavily taxed.. It costs like 24$ when you can normally get in Ontario for like 14$.. We are the worst drivers because we jay walk, plus we aren't farm land.. Have you ever heard of a tractor incident? WE DRIVE BAD BECAUSE THERES MORE PEOPLE DRIVING~! its like crime (yes its true, we don't lock our doors and its not because we dont have anything to steal) theres more crime if there is more population Everyone loves canada and its medicare... A few years ago, Quebec had an election about seperating from Canada.
51% of the voters voting against seperating. So, the vote almost passed. If Quebec has the vote again than they might actually seperate.

Newfoundland, Prince Edwards Is. , and the other two provindences in that area might be US states if Quebec seperates. :) ;) :p

My teacher said Quebec will leave and the four island providences could join America because they won't be able to be self-sufficient(they would but not succesfully). Alberta and ONtario will stay, they are important providences.

Why would they stay? Alberta has its own wallet full of oil money.. and Ontario has some intellectuals. They would not support the islands or the territories or British Colombia

So much unwarrented praise for our politicians that will sympathize with our jew-hating leader of the Marijuana Party, we're trying to stop the US from prosecuting him? He deserves everything that coming to him. No, I believe our country lacks sensible politicians in all the parties, although Jack Layton paricularly pisses me off. Our country is pretty good but our politicians are nothing to brag about.

I don't know I'm bad at answering intellectual questions, but the Atlantic Providences won't function as well is Quebec has its own nation. So, the will probably join the #1 nation in the world= USA :)
La Terra di Libertas

The Atlantic Provinces would fight Quebec seperation to the death, they are loyal Canadians and don't want to be seperated from the rest of te country because Quebec (and this coming from someone who has spent a lot of time in Quebec City) has a hissy fit we don't do more to protect French in Canada, which is bs. No, Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and New Brunswick want to stay Canadian and likely wouldn't join with the Americans.

But think about it... why would the Atlantic Provinces not function? It's not as if they won't be able to trade with Quebec, or as if the oil off Newfoundland would disappear, or goods would stop being transported, either through Quebec or through the USA, both of which Canada would have free trade agreements with.

They may suffer a bit since total Canada revenue, and the amount of Federal help they can receive, will be lower without Quebec, but not the point of being unsustainable. And besides, they already rejected the idea of joining the USA once and haven't regretted it. I think that's why the US keep obsessing over them.

Actually, I think if Quebec separated you'd probably see Alberta annex British Columbia, because Alberta is landlocked and needs a port. Ontario too faces the same problem, because although Toronto is an inland port, if Quebec claims sovereignty over the St. Lawerence River then Ontario becomes effectively landlocked too (yeah, there's Moosonee up north, but that's frozen over for most of the year). The Maritimes may join the US, but they may also unite as a single country themselves and could be successful given that they're not landlocked and might be able to revive the fishing industry once they get rid of control from Ottawa.

In short, the separation issue is a bit more complicated than one might think.

Yeah, but I'm a skinny British Columbian, so I'm allowed to say that. Did you know that half of all adults living in Toronto are overweight? That explains Canada's obesity rate....
And we're not crime free, but we can't even compare to the US in gun related deaths.

Not really at free will. We will soon need passports, and those with criminal records can't enter the US. And, living on Vancouver Island, there is no way I could get anything done in the US and get back home by dinner. It's a five-hour round trip to downtown Vancouver. Add in the border line-up time, and it's just not worth it to visit the US. I haven't been for six years, and the last time was just for Disneyland.

That's true. Don't get me wrong; I dislike guns, I just wanted to point out that gun ownership is not directly related to shooting deaths. One person can own thirty guns and use them all for hunting, while another can own just one and kill a person.

Uh... why would it change?
I'd like to point out that many of Canada's provinces are well off, and while the standard of living might suffer if Quebec separated, theres no reason any other provinces would separate. Places like PEI and Newfoundland still have maritime access through Hudson Bay and can drive across Quebec as they would any other time in order to get to the other provinces.
Wow, its amazing how hopeful you sound. :P It won't happen at all, and Canada would keep on going if it did. Don't think Canada would fall apart without Quebec.
