Are office relationships that detrimental

My friend was recently caught making out with her boyfriend on more than 1 occasion. They were not exactly in a very concealed manner. All their dignity were exposed in front of their boss.

However, she has argued that office relations should be allowed as it is through work that people socialise so bosses should not have the right to interfere. Moreover, it makes work more fun.

Is it detrimental?

Speaking as someone who "knows"; I think office relationships are fun. especially if you do the "are they, aren't they" thing going.

You do have to watch out if they are in a position of Superior, Underling or if it is a very nasty breakup.

My organisation has policies in place to deal with both of these eventualities.

Office relationships as in dating one of your coworkers should be ok. Office relationships as in making out with one of your coworkers during working hours in the office is a definite no no and grounds for dismissal.
EDIT: Unless you work in the porn industry, in which case it should be ok.

in my experience yes.

I got a job, met a guy, we started dating. I found out a few dates in that his Grandma was my regional supervisor. So now, not only am I dating a guy at work, but I am dating my bosses grandson. Then I get promoted. Now not only am I dating a guy at work who is related to my boss but now I am his boss.

Aparently me being his boss, set off something in his brain because he got insanely jealous. I ended up having to call the cops on him once because he was threatening me, and I still had to work with him because his grandma wouldn't transfer me. Well, it wasn't long before we broke up, and that was messy.

I got it to where he wouldn't work on my shift which started to calm things down, except for one night when I had to come in for someone else I caught him doing something competely against company rules, something that anyone else would have gotten fire for. I was trying to be charitable so I wrote him up for it. BIG mess.

I ended up getting fired because I got married. go figure.
