There is no escape from NS.
Okay, so I was writing an essay earlier today, after convincing myself to stay off NS...because I invariably get involved in some discussion or other if I so much make just one post, and I really needed my work finished by this afternoon. Was sitting there doing my research, etc. like a good boy when on a whim, I decided to google something i'd read about called the republic of Mahabad.
And guess what one of the links was?
http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/-1/page=display_nation/nation=mahabad
BAH.
I had to smile to myself. Avoidance is futile! I was able to avoid the temptation, but hell if that wasn't cruel.
So...who else finds NS takes on a greater priority than schoolwork/real work? :p
And where did you read about Mahabad?
And where did you read about Mahabad?
I was writing up a case study on Kurdish nationalism and the seccessionist movement. The "Republic of Mahabad" was a small Kurdish republic established by the USSR after it jointly invaded Iran with Britain in WW2.

but yeah, a number of times over the last year NS has stolen precious moments away from deadline-cramming time - usually essays or exams, you know, only the important things :headbang:
damn NS, its evil i tells ya

I'm grateful to NationStates... :)

I'm sure NS nations will pop up when looking for real places.
One day my Jeruselem will pop-up on some student's research paper :D

Alas, I see no such future for Kanabia. :(
After googling, There seems to be a Macedonian band named Kanabia, and someone who plays counterstrike that goes by Kanabia (I use "Ceeker" as my nickname, so it ain't me)...an old account I used to have in a game called sim country...Something marijuana related...someone's blog...an urban dictionary article by Shaed that mentions me...A lot of stuff in Polish/Czech/other east european language...
But pretty much everything else is me on this forum.

Hehehe. Going blind is worth it!
...I think. It would be hard to make posts while blind. I'd have to get myself a typing monkey.

So worth it. NS is what got me through the lead up to the HSC (final Australian (NSW) highschool exam). Me and my friends had our own nations and we would spend every morning discussing what we had done the last night. Even now that's over I'm no better!

Ooh. I found NS just after I finished high school. Come to think of it, I procrastinated just as much before coming on here, but on less worthwhile things. Or more worthwhile things. Depending on your point of view. :p

Oh, hell yeah. All essays are put off until the day before the deadline (which is always Monday 12pm), and then I spend much of Sunday afternoon, evening, night and Monday morning flicking onto NS when my creative juices are at a low ebb. There's just something about those abortion debates that makes me write good history essays...

Perhaps you could get funding for researching that theory. Does the frequent viewing of NS forums during time allocated for other activities actually improve the quality of work ? I think that couold take at least six months to thorourghly research... oh and it'd probably need a pretty hefty grant too.
I ought to know if anyone does. I've tried to quit seven times, and all I got was a lower post count.

i once claimed that getting drunk was a good way to write essays. but since then i've read those essays. :p so now im undecided. :D

Six months? Jeez, that would just be for some background reading and a little bit of groundwork. In the world of academia, this proposal could be stretched for 5 years and around £1.5 million!

A little bit of drinking does indeed help - you need to maintain your intake so as to always have 2 pints in your bloodstream. That way, you come up with stuff easily, but never to the point where you're just writing crap.

Well, I like a little bit of sleep after I've finished my essays, so I normally finish around 6am the day it's due in, then 5 hours sleep, then go hand it in. But, so long as you get it in on time, it's all good. Made one deadline with 3 minutes to spare once. After sprinting up seven flights of stairs because the lift was broken.

Hmmm. I've never tried writing an essay while drunk/stoned.
But if i absolutely must give that a test...twist my arm, hey? ;)

Now you're talking... problem though which nobel prize would i be eligable for... theres gotta be the prospect of a nobel prize or any given task is ultimately a hollow faliure.
I find that the biggest problem NS has caused me is in standard conversation with any of my friends. My topics of conversation invariably begin with:
"I saw a thread on NS..."
I think they may get sick of the fact that I, personally, have absolutely no stories of my own to tell.

the theory is that when you're in a "normal" state of mind, their are some things you're not willing to write. in contrast when you're drunk you write down whatever the hell you think of, a surprising amount of which is gold. and more surprising is how much of it isn't crap. inevitably their is a fair bit of stupid crap, but that's mostly funny.

Yeah, I did that today.
I was up until about 4am procrastinating...got to uni at about 12pm the next day. In a concerted effort, I managed to finish at 4:50pm - 10 minutes before it was due. Sprinted to the main building where I had to hand it in, but the office was on 6th floor...and the escalators weren't working. So I dashed up the stairs.
Ugh.

Hmm, yeah, but that's probably better for poetry/lyric writing than essay writing.

Never tried writing essays stoned...a friend of mine once did an exam while still high from the night before, and he got a first on it.

It's perfectly okay to endorse it, because i'm sure most teachers wouldn't see them as performance "enhancers". :p

So...who else finds NS takes on a greater priority than schoolwork/real work? :pI've been less addicted of late, but when I was writing quite a big piece of academic research in April/May of this year, I always had to come here before commencing any work on it :D I'm surprised I got it done in the end, even more so that it received quite a good mark.
