Ummm, I have a question...

about 4 or 5 years ago, when i was 16, I complained of chest pains, and mom took me to a docter a few days later. Turns out, I had a small hole in my heart, but was "nothing to worry about".

I'm 20, and I'm still having the every-once-in-a-while chest pain, and when I told mom about it, she reminded me of that doctor's visit. Apparently, I completely forgot that I was told right to my face that there was a hole in my heart. 5 years will do that to me, i guess.

Since I still have chest pains every now and then, (i'm 20 now), should I worry about it or something?

Why don't you ask your doctor instead of a forum?

You should always be concerned about chest pains.
Especially when coupled with other symptoms like numbness of the limbs, or difficulty in breathing.
If it happens with any kind of regularity, you should most definately get a check-up.

Go visit your doctor and perhaps a cardiologist, get a cardiac ultrasound check, may be a atrial septum defect or ventricular septum defect or a host of other things...most often it´s back pains though

go get it checked out. if it turns out there's nothing wrong you can stop worrying, and if there is a problem (and i sincerely hope there isn't) the sooner you do something about it the better.

Yeah, when i told mom, she said that she would schedule another appointment. I posted cuz I wanted everyone's view on it, and.... yeah.

Yeah. I get mild chest pains from time to time....mostly on the left side, but occasionally on the right. Got it checked out and it turns out my back is screwed. So now I stretch and they go away.

"Why don't you ask your doctor instead of a forum?"

because doctors in america tend to blow it off in the early stages, especially if they know you dont have insurance. theres no real money in prevention...

since i was 16 i have had heart palpatations, chest pains, and dizziness. i have been told that i had a heart murmur("you will grow out of it")an irregular heart beat, gas,a defective valve, and angina(sp?). yet i was just told to keep an eye on it since i was too young to have serious complications. none of the doctors i have been to seemed at all concerned until recently when i was put on meds for high blood pressure. if i questioned them about it,im sure they would insinuate that it is because i dont eat right or get enough exercise. i even had a doctor suggest to me once that my palpatations and blood pressure was due to a thyroid medication i take. i dont think they have a clue what is going on(or they just dont want to mess with me since i am not rich...heart surgery is risky and expensive) if you dont have alot of money or at least excellent insurance, they give you the runaround and try to patch the problem instead of fixing it. the best thing you and i could do would be to go to a specialist(a heart specialist) and demand that they run tests until they can tell you for sure what the problem is and what to do about it. but the tests are expensive, and surgery is even more expensive.

poor people in america dont get decent health care. i think if you fall below "middle income" your healthcare should be free....

My father had almost exactly what you describe. His doctors kept an eye on it for years. Finally, last summer, he had an operation to repair it - he was 63. He is recovering nicely.

Doctor's opinions cost more than the monthly cost of cable internet.

Doctor's opinions cost more than the monthly cost of cable internet.Teehee, my internet is free, while the doctor costs me medication and 10 € per quarter...

Anyway, what kind of pain is it? Is it centered around the heart, like a stabbing pain as though something was being pulled?

Is healthcare that bad/expensive in America? Here in NZ a GP visit for children (13 or 14 and under or something like that) is free. It seems like your doctors just want money? That is so strange.
EDIT: Sorry if that sounded ignorant. I just really had no idea what the healthcare system is like over there. Seems amazingly different.

Yes, it is centered around the heart.

well, i don't know about stabbing, but the last major pain, it felt like a pull, so yeah.

if you have insurance, get it checked out. if you dont, research it on the net.

There must be some sort of problem if you are having Pains. I found out when I was 20 that I had a heart murmer and a mitral valve prolapse.. only reason it reared it's head was because I was under Alot of stress and was having lots of anxiety attacks and heart flutters. But I never had any pain. Get a second opinion or third opinion if you can.

you can get your medical records from the original doctor to help you in your net search. it should show just what kind of "hole in your heart" you have. many really are no big deal.

That's your best suggestion.

I'm no doctor, but a hole in your heart seems bad any way you look at it. I'd try and get it fixed and/or treated as soon as possilbe.
