What "Tropico" presidente would your Nationstate be?

Passivocalia
05-10-2005, 04:08
Let's have some fun. The PC game Tropico allows a players to be "presidente" of a small, obscure Caribbean island, starting in the 1950s. Players plan the island, create their dictator's characteristics, and rule through the Cold War era into modern times (unless the island inhabitants successfully rebel against the government, or a foreign superpower intervenes).

Now, take the most prominent leader of your main Nationstate. If your main Nationstate does not have a historic leader, then just try your best to design your answers with the nation's best interest in mind (i.e. how you answer issues). Here are the categories and options:

Actually yes. Sociable get on well enough with tourists and entertainment efficiency, but crime rate does rise a bit. ;)

Curiously enough, Communist respect also rises a wee bit. I guess "sociable" sounds enough like "socialist".

For "positive traits", there should be one called "solid". The dictator who has the "solid" trait is extremely strong and well built. In "flaws" how about adding "homicidal".

The dictator who has this has some program or programs of ethnic cleansing or genocide in place for a certain group or groups of people. "Sociopathic", means that the dictator thinks nothing of eliminating those who disagree with him or stand in his way by any means possible. "Nerdy" and "greedy" should also be flaws.

Physically strong? That's Athletic:

Athletic: The medal you won at the 1948 Summer Olympics impresses everyone.

Militarists' respect: +5%
Intellectuals' respect: -5%
Sports complex cost: -20%
Sports complex rating: +50%

"Sociopathic" are a lot like Paranoid.

Paranoid: Are you trying to kill me? I think you are! Yes, yes. I see it all you DO want to kill me! Guards!

Overall respect: -10%
Militarists' respect: +10%
Police resented like soldiers
(This is a great choice if your Nationstate has a secret police force that functions as a basic defensive military, as mine does.)

"Genocidal" is probably avoided because it strays the line between funny and offensive. There is a game option for Immigrants Out!, which bars any foreigners from emigrating to your island. It makes things a lot rougher though.

There's no "Greedy", but there is Cheapskate.

Cheapskate: One couldn't pry a Peso from your dead hand with a crowbar. Of course, we thought you were dead or we wouldn't have tried.

Communists' respect: -10%
Building costs: -5%
Cannot pay workers more than $25/month

I think "Nerdy" would be a terrific option too! Something about pleasing intellectuals but really agitating the militarists.

Other good flaws, in my opinion, would be "Religious Dissident", "Foreigner", or "Klutz".

Amestria
05-10-2005, 07:38
President Richard Hume of the State of Amestria

Background: Silver Spoon; Hume is from a very rich and powerful family which has a long history in government. They were Amestria's Royal family 200 years ago, but stepped down after the declaration of a Republic (not willingly, but there was no blood shed and in the spirit of compromise a Hume became the countries first President). The class warriors don't like him for that, but he has name recognition, is a Socialist and has the Hume family magic, so what are they going to do about it? He also served briefly as a Professor at the University of Amestria City.

Rise to Power: Elected as Socialist; the Humes believed firmly in free enterprise/trade but also strong believers in a planned society that maximizes happiness/minimizes pain. The Amestria Social Model is a product of compromise between the capitalist and socialist factions brokered by such figures as Richard Hume.

Positive Traits: Incorruptible (he is already quite rich and is personally honest), Administrator (he loves making plans) and Scholarly (he is highly educated and a prominent intellectual).

Flaws: Alcoholic (he likes booze allot, but it is not a disease), Short Tempered (he is difficult to get along with personally) and Coward (he is afraid of assassination, is a hypochondriac, and always puts his life first).

Motivation: Place in History (he wants to be remembered and admired) and Boredom (politics helps pass the time until death).

Tropico! Its so amazing. It's like NationStates with graphics.

After many careful porings through my manual, my conclusions are thus-

Background: Leftist Author, I am broadly left-wing and I like to write. A perfect option.

Rise to Power: Elected as Socialist, I support both democracy and socialism.

Positive Traits: Green Thumb and Scholarly, gotta support Education and the Environment. Well, I do.

Flaws: Cowardly (representation of reality) and Alcoholic (less representative, but fun because it makes the Russians like you).

Motivation: Don't Worry, Be Happy, as a happy nation is the true sign of success as a leader.

I rarely play like that tho. I usually play as an intensly cheapskate Capitalist hoping to make a fortune from fine jewellery. And usually succeeding :D

Dishonorable Scum
05-10-2005, 17:48
So, how to characterize Jacob Chmielewski the Unspeakable One, Supreme Dictator and Most Dishonorable of Scum? Hm...

Background: Professor. Mad scientist, actually.

Rise to Power: He killed everyone else who wanted the job. Call it a Military Coup, I guess.

Positive Traits: Scholarly - he is a scientist, after all. And Hard-working - he works quite hard at amassing all power to himself.

Flaws: What, we're limited to only two? Pompous, obviously - anyone whose favorite phrase is "Silence, you fool!" is clearly pompous. And Short-tempered. Though Kleptomaniac, Paranoid and Ugly are in the running too.

Motivation: To amass as much power to himself as he can, for as long as he can. Long-term thinking isn't one of his skills. Call it ‘Tis Money that Makes the Man, since money and power are connected.

Background: Farmer (I was just minding my own business, working the farm, before any of this "adventure-seeking" started!)
Rise to Power: Heir Apparent (Just as my lord Don Quijote promised, he has finally given me an island to rule.)
Positive Traits: Empathy, Incorruptible (After hearing every side of a story, I try to make the wisest and most just choice.)
Flaws: Coward, Moronic (I may not be the smartest man, but I'm smart enough to stay away from my wife Teresa when she has a mind to abuse me!)
