My removable hard drive is equally small, and holds not just music, but any kind of data.. I've never understood paying such a price for a unit that only does music (doesn't it?). What's the pricetag on one of those things anyway?

Its a portable hard drive with music playing software, but it can hold more than just music. You cant carry your removable hard drive around and play music off it can you.

Sure can. It's got headphone holes, a voice recorder, and radio too... kinda old technology now (only 256mb, $69 on sale at Fry's), but I don't use more than around 100mb anyway... so I have no clue what they cost nowadays, since the one I have has lasted me 2 years.

Edit: Looking at the apple website, it seems the ipod is a pretty good value if it's $199 for 4gb... plus, it looks neat, while most removable HD's are a simple utilitarian design.. although I have no clue what I'd do with 4gb of music, or how I'd ever amass that much.. in my 5 years of downloading songs, I've got less than 1gb, most of which I never listen to. :p

I can hold lots of stuff, it can be activated to hold files as well by turning into a storave device within iTunes. It also holds 25,000 photos, color screen, calender, notes, contacts, alarm, games etc.

iPod > your "portable hard drive"

(Sorry, but your thing isn't a hard drive - take a look at the iPod mini and iPod for a hard drive device. Your device probably utilizes flash based memory or something similar to store information.)

Dunno. It plugs into the USB and takes all forms of data, which kinda seems like a hard drive to me, but maybe not. In any case, there's no question the ipod has more features, but I think I did well for the price, since I can't really imagine ever needing that kind of space. If I had the cash though, I'd be on board.

Price tag for a 20-40gig iPod? $Stupid.
Price tag for the same size Nano? A little past $the-company-is-laughing-at-you.

I'm jsut gonig to wait for HP/Dell, or whatever it is now, to come out with their rival for the shuffle. Same price and drive size but even more features.

Yeah, these iPods are getting smaller all the time, but I do not think there will be an iPod pico.

next one, and i said this first, is going to have double the hard drive space as the nano and be able to play video files.

Oh yes, some of these Nanos have cracked screens due to manufacturing faults at Apple. I think 1 in 1000 have the issue with first batches that were released.

Yes, they should stop making them smaller, and instead make them able to do more!
