Isn't it a bit of a stretch to describe people hwo live thousands of miles away from France as "French?"

I pray that this is not true. Please [your diety of choice] say this is a lie or I may have to find the bastard who did this and use him as shark bait.

It's from the Sun....

It's the US equivalent of pulling a story from the Globe, or National Inquirer...

It's as valid as any other story of similar calibre from those agencies.... And a wonder someone would use it in the first place, and (pulling from another thread), shows a problem of people distinquishing between real news, opinion, and fantasy...

I suppose we should also assume the orginal poster believes that the Bush's are going to divorce over Dubya's drinking problem.... And that a women in Arkansas is giving birth to tripplets from her extraterrestrial husband... Because we know he must be one of those with "Inquiring Minds" who "Want to Know" (how not to identify real news)...

To be fair, the RSPCAreports that it's true. So if it's a hoax, there's at least one fairly large organization that's gonna look a little silly.

Bridget Bardot is actually taking up this cause as well. Of course, given recent understandings about her, that may not be as great as one might think.

Also the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is reporting it as well.

Maybe whackos, maybe concerned individuals (http://www.seashepherd.org/news/media_050818_1.html)

OMG! Well, it looks like the old saying about dogs being man's best friend will have to be revised. I'm not quite sure which way to go though. Should we say that dogs are no longer man's best friend, or should we say that the French aren't men? :D

EDIT: In all fairness, the Koreans like dogs so much that they have them over for dinner! :D

I've heard the story before, from an interview with Bardot. At first I thought it was just her usual ravings, but it turns out to be true.

WWII showed the French are not men. What do you expect from a country whose best fighting force are foreigners?

On a side note Where's PETA? complaining about Mulesing probably.

As horrid as I find that photo, all I can say is that people trying to score cheap shots at Jean Average Frenchdude as being in any way complicit in the actions of the citizens of overseas protectorates are really stretching the bounds of common sense.

The return argument, of course, would be to comment that at least they only abuse animals and to return fire with the "American brutality" of the recent instances of sweatshops workers getting beaten half to death while sewing "Made in America" labels on Korean-made garments in American Samoa to be put for sale at JC Penny's everyehwere....

http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=145

Of course, the response from U.S. House Subcommittee on Human Rights, was to just blame the Vietnames for sending people to work on American soil.

"A [Vietnamese] government agency was actively involved in trafficking its own people into what they had to know amounted to slavery," said Rees, who visited American Samoa this month to investigate the case. "They kept sending people after they knew workers were not paid, were locked up and beaten if they tried to escape the complex."

Right. It's Vietnam's fault for keeping on sending people to work in sweatshops on US soil......

There, do we all feel better now?

After all, we're only supposed to apply those standards to Americans, right?

Nope, but when the discussion deteriorates to the "They aren't even men" crap that Eutrusca and others were going - then a response is in order.

Because I DO apply the same standards to both. I just don't equivalence the actions of a few on Reunion to being the ethical standard of all Frenchmen. Just as I also don't equate the actions of a few sweatshops in Samoa with the business practices of all Americans.

It's the painting with wide brushes and unneccessary spiteful invective that gets the response - not the initial story that was worth examination.

Oh, I see. Like when people equate the actions of some soldiers at Abu Gharaib with the ethical standards of all American soldiers. Or equating the actions of 19 hijackers with the intent of all Muslims.

I see.

Precisely. And although I detect sarcasm in your tone, I think if you review you will nto find my ever having made such moronic statements or ever having supported anyone whose argument was based upon them.

Which was, after all, indicated in that first paragraph that you quoted where I was very clear that I was responding to the "people trying to score cheap shots at Jean Average Frenchdude as being in any way complicit in the actions of the citizens of overseas protectorates "

Yes, I get the idea that you don't regularly use the Wagner Power Painter to do your painting.

But most of the people on this forum seem to. It's like nails on a blackboard.

Not be argumentative, but when you respond harshly and in a manner predicated upon your perception of the "Wagerishness" of the board as a whole... you might just want to check your own fingernails for chalk.

Because you kinda sank to that same level there.

I stand by my racial slur :)
Seriously though, the actions were implied to be wide spread, as the RSPCA or equivalent organisation were unable to immeadiately identify the possible culprit or at least an suspect, and Reunion is not exactly New York. If I ever saw that, people would need to transported to the mainland
I agree with the post about locking PETA in cages though
