Or maybe infrastructure remained intact as opposed to the chaotic infrastructure that "survived" Hurricane Katrina.

Or maybe because everyone has guns. I'll go with the latter.

New Orleans did have a higher proportion of "poor people".
The damage was less too so services could operate better after the big event.

Texas had a decent response. Simple enough, the whole place was not flooded and people had a plan.

I have my doubts that guns were the sole cause of this (remember what people nicked from Wal-Mart in NO?)

And how many people died as a direct result of the Rita hurricane? Perhaps the intensity of the storm was not as great? Perhaps the authorities, seeing the looting during the Katrina hurricane, learned its lesson about protecting private property? Perhaps the 'wild west' syndrome ('every home an arsenal') in Texas is more developed? But to see the bumber to bumber traffic on Texan highways leading out of vulnerable areas would lead me to believe that the authorities in Texas were no more prepared for a mass exodus than those in Louisiana.

Why there was no looting in Texas after Hurricane Rita
There was no looting because far less damage was inflicted on a more robust system.

In credit to the citizens of Texas, I like to think that - given the same situation - the scale of looting would be the same. Except; rather than being a "shopping spree", it would all be firmly self organized in a clear effort to distribute all available resources to the widest number of victims.

I also wish to point out that Texas is hardly lacking in its' share of urban poor. Ditto statewide ethnic diversity.

Oddly, it's working for some people and not for others.

Aaah, so that explains why there was no looting. Obviously someone set up a great deal of porno catering to all tastes, thereby tangling up looting attempts as people battled their libido. :p

EDIT: All religious super funddies who objected were probably rounded up and locked in a basement. ;)

GALVESTON, Texas -- Authorities have charged 10 people with looting from evacuated homes and businesses in Galveston County before, during and after Hurricane Rita.

More arrests may follow as some residents return to find break-ins.

Galveston County District Attorney Kurt Sistrunk said he wouldn't be surprised to find more than 100 cases in which people were victimized for leaving their homes or businesses.

"It's disgusting that we have to deal with this type of crime in an emergency situation," Sistrunk said.

I was going to post this, but you beat me too it.

A friend of mine from Houston reported that there was looting in Galveston before Rita hit. She was a bit puzzled about why it didn't make national news, though.

I have my theories, but I'm keeping them to myself.

Maybe because there was no major damage? Come on, CNN only reported on rain and high winds. How Ghetto.
