WTF is "zip-lining?" [ confused look ]

Saw this in the NY Times email, but the article didn't explain it: "Cruise passengers are leaving the buffet table behind in favor of sportier excursions: hiking, rafting or zip-lining."

Any ideas?

Ooh! This is fun!

Zip-lining is when you string up rope between two cliffs (one preferably higher than the other), strap your ass to a harness, then litterally "zip" down the line.

Hence "zip-lining".

KEWL! Hmmm. I might have to try that ... after I recover from this frakkin' operation that is. Sigh.

Well, if memory serves, a zip line is a relatively strong line (nylon?) which you clamp something on so that it doesn't fall off. This is a guess, but I think it means stringing a line from one end to another that is much lower and "zipping" down the line with something akin to a pulley.

Zip-lined once (that's used a flying fox). :)

It's not that great. I found abseiling more fun. I'm evidently proficient at jumping backwards off a cliff. Hmm.

I think they're one and the same, yeah.

What about Bungee jumping?

Haven't tried that (yet). I'm planning to go skydiving one of these days though. :D

Zip-Lining doesnt have to be between 2 cliffs. Your staring point just has to be above your ending point.

I did it at camp a few time, really fun. The only bad part is waiting for the peeps to wheel the platform over to you to get you down.

My groin still hurts.

There's a really nice one at Ft. Benning that goes across a river.

...Yeah, I kinda forgot to mention that you may not be able to walk for a while afterwards...

Also, Make sure you have the harness on tightly. If it's loose, your pain and discomfort will increase exponentialy.

Never zip-lined but climbing harnesses seem much the same way. Any sport that involves jumping into space attached to a rope is like that I guess.

The one at Ft. Benning has no harness. You step up to the cliff edge, and take hold of a T-bar over your head. That's it. Then you run off the edge, and you slide down to the other side of the river.

You have the option of dropping away at any time.

Ziplining is most fun when done over terrain you don't want to fall into. A field of cactuses, for instance. :)

Having some mud to land in at the end is fun too. :)

So even if you have no upper-body strength it's all good? Nice. :D

It's part of basic training for infantrymen in the US Army.

You spend part of the day marching, and you end up at the cliff. The only way across the river is by taking the "Slide for Life".

If you fall in the river, you had better know how to swim with all your gear on.

Did in Boy Scouts at a jamboree. They erected a platform that was a couple hundred feet in the air, and when it was my turn i got to the top and chickened out. At least, I thought i did. I was already hooked up, and asked to be un-hooked... and then someone from my troop pushed me off the thing and down i went. Scared the shit right out of me. I would do it again in a heart beat!!!

if you want to try it at one of the top places, go to Costa Rica...I think it is in the El Bosque (okay, I cant spell. shut up.) area...they have the longest run, as well as the fastest...I think it was a total of 13 zip lines through forrest and over valleys. The long one is over a huge drop.

Zip lining is pretty cool - depends on the line really.

Abseiling is better - more of an adrenaline rush.

Bungy jumping is the best. By a country mile. It's the most awesome rush ever, seriously. If you're not already there, go to New Zealand right now , get down to Queenstown, South Island, and do the Nevis - 134m of pure, crazy, brilliant awesomeness :D

Trust me.

I did it over a pungent lake/swamp once. :p
