So! What is everyone's favorite song? Why?

To start it off, my favorite song is American Pie by Don McLean. It's a great-sounding song with a catchy tune, and it tells a story. Granted, I'm not quite sure what the story's about, but that's not important. :D

I also enjoy the Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. It sounds wonderful, and is truely memorable.

So, I've shared, so let's hear what you all like.

Based purely on statistics generated by iTunes, my top 3 favorite are "We Are All On Drugs" (Weezer), "Hell's Bells" (AC/DC), and "De-Evolving" (Jonathan Coulton). As for actual favorite...that's a toughie.

hm good idea

my top 3 in WMP by playcount are: Heliograph by Sean Penn (a nice tune to chill out to), Misdirection (Laptops At Dawn mix) by Pitchshfter, and Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin.
i'm on something of a drum n bass binge at the mo - the first metal track comes in at number 9 with Nomad by Sepultura... though i say its unfair cos my HDD failing in may skews the results loads

as for personal favourite, today its probably Graven Image by Bolt Thrower (awesome grindcore metal band)

"Smells Like Teen Spirit", because it's as near-perfect as any song out there, and is as near-perfect as any song is likely to be.

Granted, I'm not quite sure what the story's about, but that's not important. :D I take it you're unfamiliar with the deaths of Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and Frankie Valli in a plane crash in 1959?

my top 3 in WMP by playcount are: Heliograph by Sean Penn (a nice tune to chill out to), Misdirection (Laptops At Dawn mix) by Pitchshfter, and Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin. Pitchshifter and Aphex Twin are two of the few techno bands/artists that don't suck.

But i'm listening to Paranoid by Black Sabbath. It's one of my favourites, at least...

These days I've been listening to J. Edgar Hoover performed by the Kronos Quartet. I don't know where the case is so I don't remember the composer. But I dig it.

Lots of cuts from 'This is Your FBI' w/J. Edgar over harsh string versions of patriotic music. Combines my love of 20th century music and radio drama.

Lemme enlighten you.

McLean's "American Pie" is about Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper.

After the plane crash that killed all three men, there was a bit of a void in Rock and Roll.
Elvis had joined the army, and wasnt making records.
Even when he came back, he was doing "clambake" movies.

The Beatles were about 5 years away.
So, in essence "The Music Died".

"I went down to the sacred store, where I'd heard the music play before, but the man there said the music wouldnt play."

Now you know.

and knowing is half the battle.

Yo Joe.

Yeah, it's great. I saw them live earlier this year. They still rocked even though their original bassist left.

You'd probably like Kyuss. QOTSA and Kyuss are practically the same band, only Kyuss is somewhat heavier. If you see "Welcome to Sky Valley" in a shop sometime, pick it up...i'd say it's probably my favourite album.

EDIT- Shitty quality, but here's an MP3... http://a425.v8384d.c8384.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/426/8384/3b858b51/mtvrdstr.download.akamai.com/8512/wmp/2/2386/3764_1_4_05.asf

My comp didn't like that MP3 enough to make it work. Luckily we're (finally) getting our new comp delivered sometime this week.

If I see it, I'll have a listen and see what I think :)

McLean's "American Pie" is about Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper.Damn, why'd I say Frankie Valli instead of Ritchie Valens? Now I feel like I've insulted Ritchie Valens.

Definetly "Frayed Ends Of Sanity" by metallica, i like how they sing it and the drums...

Old habits reapear,
fighting the fear of fear,
growing conspiracy,
everyone is after me,
frayed ends of sanity,
hear them calling,
hear them calling me!

Some of my favorite songs are super-long ones... such as The Odyssey by Symphony X, and A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater (both over 20 minutes), but there are also some excellent short songs, like Goodbye Blue Sky by Pink Floyd.
