Mario...Can it get any simpler? Just kill the evil gaint Turtle and save the princess. Well.....Link is an ongoing one, it makes some sense.... Starcraft is also good.....Killing things that want to assimilate you....Oh well, every game has a good plot, it just depends how you look at it.

agreed. the world has such an incredible amount of depth; every NPC is actually a part of society, every location has a significance, every faction and every town has a history....it just goes on and on. there are even books written about the land's history, and you become a living part of that history as the game progresses. the plot itself is filled with intrigue and it is anything but your typical linear, cliche story of heroism. it's simply incredible.

I'd have to say that Psychonauts had a great storyline. It was funny, different, a bit cliché, and involved travelling into other people's brains, all of which had their own subplot in them. Other than that, Wind Waker and the metal Gear Sold series had good storlines as well. I liked the Golden Sun, FFX, and Crono Trigger storlines as well.

...and how far back you want to go.

for old school,i would say THE GUARDIAN LEGEND and the original LEGEND OF ZELDA....

for newer systems,i give the SILENT HILL series two thumbs up. my fav is the first one, even though the graphics are not as good as the ones that came later. it was lonely and creepy. you come into the story after the fact(after the whole town and its citizens have been lost to the darkness)and you have to figure out what the hell is going on.(literally) the game has a sense of dread that i dont think was matched by the sequels. i also like number 3 because it ties in with number one(the girl grows up)and it has awesome sound effects and music. you see Harry die,but you wonder what ever happened to Cybil? if you saved her in part one, then you have to wonder where she went to.....i was disappointed in part 2,and i found part 4 to be annoying and left too many lose ends. im looking forward to part 5 for the PS3.....

Indeed it's Planescape Torment, just because it's more of a novel than an actual game. A game of heavy reading and incredible immersion.

Also a honorable mention is Red Alert (1... the sequel was crap).

I mean come the cutscenes were awesome. Stalin ordered you around, and then you conquered Europe and you had a commie parade glorifying Stalin... or I guess you could have played as the Allies...

It is definitely Planescape: Torment. There is just no contest, really. I've played many computer games in my time, with many great stories, but Torment's story is just on a level all its own. Nothing even comes close. Because of this, Torment is still my favourite game of all time, and is likely to be for some time, since Black Isle and Troika no longer exist, and Bioware makes junkware now.

I used to think the Final Fantasy 7 plot was something special, but it's juvenile in comparison.

An honourable mention goes to Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, which I'm replaying at the moment. The the actual main storyline is good, but not mind-blowing. The setting itself, however, and the characters are quite unique.

Comment on Halo
Agreed.

What is so great about halo is the method of storytelling. The cutscenes are cinematically incredible. And in the middle of the level the radio chatter adds a lot of depth and detail to what is happening around you. In Halo 2 I think they did a great jobh of the radio chatter between the good guy ships where they get all excited about driving off the invaders. And then you look through space to see the spaceshipt you are communicating with and it explodes. It is so detailed and cool.

Knights of the old Republic is awesome. I won't give it away because it is a game that every x box owner should play, but the plot twist was awesome! Plus there aren't many games where you can join the dark side and take over the galaxy.

I'd say Silent Hill 2. So far, I haven't played a game with a more adult, psychological plotline than this one. The "Maria" ending was particularily good, and chilling. Sure, the plotline isn't entirely lucid, but...

Morrowind and Eternal Darkness had good plotlines as well. With Morrowind, one really feels as if he is developing his own narrative alongside the overarching storyline, and I loved Eternal Darkness's Lovecraftian bent.

But you really can't beat Fuzion Frenzy for out and out brilliant storytelling.

Kid, it may be an "opinion" that the poster has, but the fact is if one says FF7 has the best plot, the truth is this: they haven't played many video games that have a serious plot focus to begin with. There is to much validity in games like the ones mentioned such as Planescape: Torment and Xenogears having a FAR greater plot than anything FF7 put out.

OK, so the plot was pretty basic when compared to other games, but they managed to effectively deliver everything simply through a bunch of talking heads and a couple of stills, from political intrige to assassination to romantic entanglements.

FF7 had a good one. Though FF3 had the BEST villian and the longest and best way of the FF series to have it open ended.

FF3 World of Balance - Plot line story
FF3 World of Ruin - Open ended (make your own) story + character backgrounds completed.

It was such a good plot line for FF3 and FF7 played very well with the plot line it had.

Though the best I'd say is FF11. Most open ended and hardest game I EVER played, with a SUPER elaborate background and history that ties so well together that makes a player actually go out of his or her way to investigate fully. You can play knowing as little or as much as you want to know and never following 'strict' guidelines.

I personally like the Halo plot myself, starting with the books.

The Fall of Reach really put into perspective what humanity was challenged with. I mean, seriously. The humans in the Halo series are more along the lines of PMT than FT. The Covenant have the upper hand and, if there hadn't been an uprising of the Sangheili (Elites), Unggoy (Grunts), and Lekgolo (Hunters), they would have wiped the galaxy clean of humanity.

I admit, the Flood are somewhat of a rip-off hybrid between the Zerg and the T-Virus infected zombies of Resident Evil, but the Gravemind really shows what they're capable of by taking control of In Amberclad and literally overrunning High Charity in a matter of hours.

I'm still waiting for the finisher. Halo III will give us an even bigger insight to humanity's fate.

Will the Prophet of Truth be able to activate the Halo System?

Can humanity win even on their home turf?

Will the Flood reach Earth?

Will the Elites and Sgt. Johnson gang-bang Cpt. Miranda Keyes?

Will Cortana stop fingering herself over the Master Chief and finally come up with a way to make herself human and make love to him? Or will she be tentacle raped by the Gravemind?

Will I ever get a life after the Halo series is complete?

Only time, and the next game, will tell...

I'm waiting for the second Halo to come out on paperback. The only thing that bothers me is that Halo II gives absolutely no acknowlegement to what happened on the Unyielding Heirophant, barely even mentions Reach, and doesn't even mention the other Spartans...ever.

Although you don't even need a plot as long as you have Sgt. Johnson as a character.

the game was first released in 2000

if you mean the ambush at the 'Ton, it is open ended, Paul only dies if you escape through the window...

BTW honorable mentions for Gabriel Knight 3 and the Baldur's Gate series

The 'Ton ambush was a bit stupid really, even if you killed every enemy Paul still died if you left through the window. Also, Paul was indestructable unless you ran so you could just hide in the cupboard until he killed everyone.

It is a legendary game though, it's just a shame they had to ruin the entire plot in the opening cutscreen. :(

Deus Ex is great, DE2 is poor, though it does clear up a few things from DE. I do love the original. Why did it take until page 3 for someone to mention it?
Mafia is also great, especially the race. And the ending is awesome too.

Dude I cried too...Still do when i replay it....gosh.... :(

Oh and I am suprised to not have seen games like Earthbound(snes), or Legend of Dragoon. I am glad NOT to have seen GTA(good game, no plot) or something along those lines

Nobody's said the Chrono series (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and whatever Chrono game comes next...). What the fuck is up with that?

The fabric of time is tearing itself apart, and you have to find out what's causing it. The original "plot" centers around keeping the future from being destroyed (and wow, does it get destroyed before you come along). As the series progresses, you find that the fabric of time itself is being destroyed, and it's up to you (and your party) to save everyone, and everything.

It's still a lot more complicated... A lot. There's a website, The Chrono Compendium, dedicated to this series' labrynthine plot.

Oh yeah, good kudos on mentioning this one; I've played it so many times over and still absolutely love the plot. Only wish that the Paul Denton encounter could have been open-ended like almost every other choice in the game.

My favorite is the .hack series (has anyone else heard of it?), even though it isn't just a game series. The plot just goes everywhere and is so mysterious, you really have to think. It's like the Matrix.
BTW, that is "dot" hack, not just hack-- .hack --(actually Project.hack)

Runner up is the Half-Life series.

Hey, it's always worth another play. Saving him doesn't change things that much though, you meet him a couple of times but he doesn't do a lot.

I'm glad that someone mentioned Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, that has a pretty damn good plot for a turn-based strategy game. The only game I can think of where you get to become a planet, as well!

And another great series- Monkey Island. I can't stand your velocity!

((Really ineffectual spoiler warning))

Wasn't what I meant; I mean that I wish there was an option to "go evil" and turn Paul in. The way the game was plotted out, your only choice was to side with him and the "good guys" as they were at the time. What I would have loved is if JC could incapacitate/kill Paul for UNATCO and join the cause of MJ12, possibly cumilating in a battle with Bob Page over who gets to merge with Helios (though I'm not sure how a piddy little mad scientist would fare against a UNATCO nano-aug agent).

Anyway, just some clarification. Someone actually came up with a pretty good mod demonstrating what might happen (props to the crew of the Hotel Carone Mod)

And I agree that Deus Ex: Invisible War was awful. But the mag-rail secondary fire was soo durn cool!

Yes. The tricky part is making it out the front door. I personally suggest making sure your energy's at maximum levels and that you have gas grenades in your inventory. They may seem useless, but with them you can disable large amounts of humanoid opponents (including MIB's)at once. Just pull out a melee weapon or tranq darts once their unable to move, pick up their stuff, and pull back to the book case if you run low on health from gas exposure. If your very careful, you can actually bottleneck all of the MIB's and UNATCO people on the stairs and the room entry itself, which makes things a whole lot easier.

Remember to go light on the gas grenades though, and strike fast in melee. It's nice to have the assault rifle, sniper rifle, shotgun, and pistol ammo they'll drop. Your going to need it.

"FF1 for nes"

i love any fantasy game that allows class changes...heehee...
like Wizardry, which i think is worth a mention as well.

the half-life plot was not very original, but the art work for the alien worlds was really cool and surreal...very nicely done.

ok...now help me out here guys,im drawing a blank. WTF??? must be getting alzheimers....

whats the game where the kids are taken to a lab and experimented on and they end up with psionic abilities? you never get any actual weapons in the game like guns, you use your psychic abilities to defeat the enemies. then your kid hero has to shoot up with psychotropic drugs in order to "recharge" his psionic stamina. one of the drugs keeps you "stable" otherwise, you totally freak and everyone around you goes splat. he is a rather young looking boy who wears a leather collar around his neck.(those japanese men are such pervs...lol) the whole plot had elements of Akira to it. i thought it was a cool game even though some of my friends said it was lame. meh...

whats the title? anyone know? i cant believe i forgot it. oye!

XIII, as the coolest game ever.

XIII was one of the worst FFs ever.

Weak plot
Gay characters
Leveling up was pointless
GF system was ok
Draw magic was retarded
The villians didn't even seem villany

The basic plot was just a watered down love story between a neutered stand alone hero and an annoying heroine. Seifer was meh at best.

Sorry, I meant XIII, not FF8. XIII is a cartoon-style FPS where you wake up on the beach as an amnesiac, suspected of murdering the president. You have to uncover a conspiracy which takes you from secret military installations to a mental hospital, the Grand Canyon to a military prison, expansive mansions, hotels, banks and a submarine.

I think the website is www.xiiithegame.com or something.

Yeah, I'm throwing my lot in with the Deus Ex crowd. You start off as a good guy, find out you're a bad guy so you go over to the bad guys which are actually the good guys to you can stop the good guys that are not really good anyway, but misguided pawns of the really really bad guys.

Doesn't get more twisted than that.
