However. I have read that there will only be 18 civs in Civ4, with no chance of having anymore than that in the game.

Of course that become moot if less than 21 people try and participate.

Actually, he was right to have two leaders. In Civ 4 the civs have two leaders with different traits. I'm not sure if they have to have two, but they have the option. Civ 4 will also include religion, and will replace the government types with a range of social options, letting you pick and mix like in Alpha Centauri.

Civ 2 was definitely my overall favourite because it was so easy to mod it and completely change the gameplay.

Apparently half of the civs included have two leaders, so this is optional. It looks like it would just affect the AI, so the leader the AI gets determines how aggressive they might be etc.

This was what I meant by civics. Each leader tends to certain civics similar to how various civilisations tended to certain governments in previous games.

Yep, plus one favoured civic and two traits for each leader. I read one of the other previews and it actually looks like the traits are far more significant than I thought. Instead of just AI strategies they give pretty solid bonuses, such as +50% wonder production.

It's looking pretty damn good so far, it was a pity that Civ 3 didn't use some of the better features from SMAC but it looks like Civ 4 will.

PS: anyone know who the Malinese were? I thought I knew a lot about history but that doesn't ring a bell...

I value them cuz they are my favorites, and I was born in Denver and Minneapolis is where i've spent most of my childhood (coon rapids, actually, since it is a suburb of Minneapolis). Choose Your Leader - Most Civs now have 2 leaders from which to choose, with each Leader having traits that provide various bonuses to the player.

Civics - With the discovery of new techs, civic options can become available. Freedom of speech or slavery? Hereditary rule or open elections? This creates endless government choices and possibilities!

Promotions - Each unit has a promotion path that emphasizes specific unit traits. Promotions include bonuses to Attack/Defend on specific terrains/features, movement bonuses, sight/visibility bonuses and increased withdrawal chances.

In-Game Movies - Civ IV will have over 70 in-game movies.

Actually, there are a number of RL american cities still in there, but can you please leave Denver and Minneapolis in it? I value them cuz they are my favorites, and I was born in Denver and Minneapolis is where i've spent most of my childhood (coon rapids, actually, since it is a suburb of Minneapolis). And Princeton is the name of the small city i live in 50 miles north-northwest of minneapolis.
No RL cities.

Okay, I might have to mod the religions then, because Atheism is the state religion in Swilatia.

IIRC there have been many threads on this topic at the civfanatics forums. I don't think it is possible to mod the religions. However, it is possible to have "free religion" civic, which is like modern western nations, or to have animism, which is your starting religion, but confers no religious bonuses.

:Edit: Also I think every nation has a unique flag (for example, for England it would be three lion on a red background). Also, I do not think that normal jpegs etc can be used as leaders pictures. The have to be movable flc files. Though I'm prepared to have egg on my face if this isn't the case.

They can be non-moving PCX files, I an just change the size of the photos, and change them to PCXs, or I can make new leaderheads based on the photos. Also, I am sure religion will be moddable. In civ3 everything was moddable in some way.

I switched it to two, so you can use both if you wish. If only one for now, use whichever one you prefer, though I personally would prefer Puller Lunphi.

EDIT: The flag was easy, it was basic swticheroo from the Scandinavian flags, since my History loverians are mostly "Elasman Christians" (I want to have a NSWiki article on that, but I don't have it up yet. It's basically a mix of some Catholic doctrine and Russian Orthodox hierarchy with Protestant beliefs, with a bit of influence from Japanese Shinto)

Pah! Civ 3, Civ 4!
When I was a kid, we had CIV II, and we were happy. That game pwns Civ 3 in so many ways, it's not even funny.I have to agree. Civ 3 is better because it has the end-of-game thingy which shows the world and the colors of the different civilizations and their territory. It also has more civilizations that can play at once. Lastly, it is more realistic. With that said, however, Civ 2 is better because you can edit the rules much more easily, and you can terraform terrain. (I HATE deserts, tundra, and mountains.)

Cities: Eaglescree, Shinaslea, Stillwater, Erinscove, Silkisle, Runeshead, Stormshead, Jenswood, Solenswood, Leeswood, Slightbay (all our cities are named after geographical features, if you're wondering why they don't sound like city names)

I can help a lot in this. I know both Python and XML which will be used to mod the game. If you need experience in those, I can help you. Also I'm working in 3D so I might be able to create units for you but I'm not good at least yet.

And finally if you need a tester I would be willing to have a go at it. :)

Also sign me up for a leader:

Your nation is now going to be a civ in this mod. Also, are you saying you want to be a graphics worker?

I think the scripts will still be in txt files. I know scripting. I modded civ3 a few times, and every time I had do do some scripting.

$50 is not that expensive, some games cost $80 after they are released (the price tag would say $79.99, but this wholl 99 cents thing is just a marketing trick).

£35

A bit pricey for my currently meagre finances. Unless I budget extra hard.

There is also the problem that it might not work on my computer. Waiting for the demo to be released.

Someone asked about the Malinese... the nation for this is Mali, in Africa. (http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761568071_4/Mali_(country).html#s15).

I don't know very much specifically about Malinese history, but it does seem like a stretch to include it with the other Civs on the list. I would've gone for the Ethiopians, personally, if I wanted an African country represented. Though I think the Zulu did a fine job too.

I'll miss the Iroquois (so much a better choice than the Sioux, in my opinion), but I also can't justify placing them over any of the other civs that were listed, so ah well.

Oh, and one more thing. All of you have put your nation's titles, but what about the PEOPLE? With the Civilization series, the groups of people have always taken precedence over the national titles they make; some of the tribes don't even have nation names.
