To all the people of the computer gaming world.
I have just had cd explode in my cd drive and am wondering if it has happened to anyone else?
The cd was not scratched/broken/dmaged in any way and had worked perfectly the day before. It had been left in the cd drive for a day and the next evening when my parents turned on the computer the cd shattered in the cd drive.
Has this happened to any one else?

Yes, I have heard this happen. Two possible reasons - microfractures in the CD leading to break-up under stress, or defective operation of the player. I heard some players were recalled a few years ago because they were prone to releasing the CD during operation, leading to it getting smashed up in the drive interior. The university I was attending at the time was affected by the recall.

Discs inherently distort while spinning in a cd drive and may break if they spin too fast or for some other odd reason.

If the CD is stable and well-balanced it should not happen. That's unless the CD you have is a little wobbly or you stuck in the microwave ;)

Check the CD drive isn't misbehaving as well.

Yes, but the CD I was using had a small crack in it, so I guess I should have seen it coming, huh?

I did notice my really old CDs (that's CD-ROMS, not the CD-R or CD-RW) are thicker than some of more recent ones. I guess they are getting thinner and more prone to cracking. The CD-R and CD-RW discs should not crack unless mishandled.

But the CD was perfect and i take good care of my cds.
And the program wasn't actually being used. My parents just started the computer and bang!
And my computer is relativley new. Only about a year old.
And the cd drive works perfectly now.
Anyother reasons?

The program not being used doesn't matter. If the BIOS is set to boot from CD before Hard Drive, it'll check the CD to see if it's bootable. But that shouldn't do anything.

You just got a badly manufactured CD I guess. Being plastic, they do go brittle eventually. :)

If the disc were not seated properly, it might slam against the side of the drive and break. And yes, when you boot, the CD drive spins, whether or not you're using the program.

Curious -- is it a horizontal or vertical drive?

Yes. It was the second time I bought it (My dog ate the first one). I was watching the TV and I heard a loud "pop" from the CD drive, and it wouldn't open. When I finally got it out, there were shards of "Deus Ex" all over the drive.

I think they are too. I dropped a new game CD (Pacific Fighters) on *carpet* the other day, and it now has a crack running along it, rendering it unreadable. It only fell about a meter...and I paid $60 for that.

Shows how easily a spinning CD can be broken.

I've never had a CD shatter in the drive, but my old CD drive once threw a spinning CD of death at me.

I put the disc in the drive and tried to access it. The drive began to make rather ominous noises. It began to whine much louder than it usually did when spinning a disc. After a few seconds, the whine became an angry growl, so I quickly pressed the eject button. Nothing happened after a few presses, so I tried to eject the tray through the OS. After a few tries, it opens. The CD was spinning wildly in the tray and after a fraction of a second, it rose into the air and flew toward me, presumably using the same principles as a helicopter. Hit me square in the forehead. I was flabbergasted!

After getting over my shock, I picked up the CD and examined it. It was structurally intact, but the surface had a series of circles scored into it. It was my copy of "Medal of Honor: Allied Assault", so I suspect that it was a secret Nazi weapon of some kind. Needless to say, I removed that drive and replaced it the very next day.

Once you start the system, the CD/DVD drive starts spinning with great speed. It might be that the CD was somehow misaligned in the drive, so the force shattered it.

Was this your Frozen Throne CD?

Hey, this is a bit unrelated but still:

My CD drive occasionally starts running quickly for no reason. Sometimes if I take it out, I get a BSOD like thing telling me to put it back in. So I do and take it out. No BSOD???

What in the name of spoons is going on?

to answer liskeinland.
It wasn't my frozen throne cd it was a friends game.
Command and conquer: Generals.
It is a horizontal drive.
What other cds have cracked?
I am extremly interested in Command and conquer cds.
