I just saw amateur footage that somehow caught the bombs going off - utterly disturbing

I live Darwin, Australia (south of Bali). Right on my doorstep!
Bali is stuffed as a holiday destination now.

Actually, it's oil. A resource like that, you pay for in blood, not just money. :(

If we stop selling them weapons, this might help ;)

Wow this thread picked up people a lot faster than the one I made last night on the exact same subject.

Yeah. It's sad that in 5 years time, it will be a minor footnote in history and mostly forgotten about by the western nations, but it will totally ruin the Balinese economy and create enduring suffering...

To be honest, I was surprised they recovered at all after the October 2003 bombing.

Australians keep the place economically viable. Moslems really don't care about Bali as it is the last Hindu area in Indonesia.

Wow, way to generalise.

Yes, I'm horridly cruel but Bali being a Hindu area is unique. Extremists would want to convert Bali into an Islamic island - finishing the job.

I'm sure there are Moslems in Bali, but it is mainly Hindu. Also because they do allow "immoral" things (in the minds of some) to go on. Sad really as the party island for Australia is going to die economically now. Most of Indonesia is Islamic including some rather extreme areas which the secular government try to control.

Wherever the jerks are connected to,

sending more guns to Indonesia's corrupt, accountablity-dodging military
will not solve any problems.

They still havn't been held accountable for occupying East Timor
for 24 years and killing 1/3 (200,000) of the population during that time.

The generals in charge of that carnage, rather than having
been brought to justice, have gone on to reak havoc in
the provences of Aceh & West Papua where they have formed
local militias to terrorize the populations just as they did in East Timor
when they burned down 70%+ all buildings when world conscience
and opinion finally forced Indonesia to withdraw.

Indonesian military also has connection to a terrorist group named
Laskar Jihad that they used to foment communal violence in the
Molucas islands where christians and muslims have historically lived
in peace.
Whether they are responsible (for Bali), we do not know.

While about 80% of Indonesia is muslim, it is a very secular gov't and
there is no way it will ever become otherwise.
Also the last president was a woman so it is no where near an Afghanistan,
before or after Taliban.

The single largest terrorist organization, both historically and post-Suharto(the dictator until '98) has been the Indonesian military.

When Suharto came to power the military slaughtered around 700,000
communists and suspected communists and those with sympathies or suspected
of such with lists given to them by the CIA.

You're really pessimistic on this, aren't you? I mean, look at New York City. They've recovered from their little attack, haven't they? More than that, they've soared. Same with everywhere else. I'm going to Spain this summer with friends, for example, and am not factoring in those little train bombings.

No, i'm being realistic. You see, after the last attack their tourism industry was almost crippled...and just when they begin to get it back on track, another attack happens. Bali isn't like New York or Spain; those places can continue with a damaged tourism industry and make a full recovery. Bali, however, relies solely on its tourism to give it economic viability. It doesn't have anything to fall back on - don't forget, it's essentially not much better than a third-world region.

Put it this way. The average person would think twice about visiting somewhere that was bombed in 2003, with westerners being specifically targeted. And the average person would certainly not even consider travelling there if it happened again...
