This is my... tool with which I make my living.

My actual main desk is a 16 channel one, rather than this 24 channel one here, and is starting to show its age somewhat - there are only so many times you can drop handmade pieces of electrical equipment before they start to get a tad flakey.

So what piece of kit keeps you off the breadline?

I owe my living to a jiffy marker and an overgrown cash register from hell.

Actually, my calculator is the fx-82WA, but the two models have identical exterior appearance.

With your bare hands? Or the Mark 1.0 human eyeball?

Jiffy marker mostly... the only thing good about my job is getting buzzed of the xylene fumes.

*sniff* :)

Eeyball mostly but sometimes a special 49 cent ruler that cost $50 to replace. Ooooooh!!!

Ohhh... fuck yeah. I remember the days when I was a kid, building balsa wood model airplanes... nothing quite smells like xylene, toulene, methyl ethyl ketone and cellulose nitrate... nothing gives you the same headache either.

Kids: The "Always use in a well-ventilated area" label isn't kidding.

Yeah, well its live sound so there is a play-off between actual musical ability and the capacity to carry heavy boxes up and down long staircases.

Yeah but it covers the smell of cow quite handily. *gags*

Tell me about it, I pulled a muscle in my back at the end of last week and almost had tears of pain in my eyes at the end of each of the five nights following.

why do they make all this musical equipment so damn heavy??

we did some extra recording (for fun) back round my mate's house and just used his marshall, some decent mics, a very small mixing desk and this here laptop (with appropriate software... gave up on cubase tho (didn't work very happily)), and we got a near-studio quality sound :)
see, studio equipment doesn't have to be massive at all... except the amps of course ;)

Well, I don't own this and I don't know how far away from the bread line I am, but these are the tools that are at least occasionally put in my hands:
http://www.nedmiller.com/images/DigiFilm.jpg
There are a few models of the 'three chip prosumer camera,' the DVX-100A is the weapon of choice of the moment. I'm sure in a year or so there'll be something better. Sony has a prosumer HD-I haven't heard of anyone using it yet.

This I do own:
http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/7f/43/pr-Apple_PowerBook_G4_M9007LL_A_Mac_Notebook_1-resized200.jpg
That runs this:
http://www.editorsguild.com/newsletter/JulAug99/JulAugImages/final_cut_pro.jpeg

But like I said, don't know how far from the bread line I am. In my last few jobs I've mostly used this:
http://www.weisd.com/store2/KENTK-3101K2.jpg
Which is, of course, much less exciting. But there you are.

Occasionally, I get this:
http://www.ikegami.co.jp/products/broadcast/camera/img/hl_dv7w.jpg
But they aren't as neccisary except certain situations like studio or big sporting events.
