Political fashion

Think the old suit-and-tie fashion amongst politicians that's been going on for quite a number of decades will die out soon?

I mean really...it's time like these it would be so appropriate if President Bush wore a black cape.

We need a politician who wears faded t-shirts, pajamma pants, and bed head.

I think all male politicans should start wearing short skirts and shave their legs.

they will be topless. Breasts needs to be demystified. When you see breasts everywhere you go, it will stop being a sexual thing, see.

There's a lot about the political world I'd like to see die out, quite honestly. As far as fashion is concerned, though, I think I'd rather see a head of state in a suit and tie than in "regular joe" jeans and sleeves rolled up. It's a matter of decorum--besides, no one who can get elected to the presidency is a regular joe, and they look like a bunch of damn posers when they try.

theres nothing respectable about wearing a suit and a tie.
Its silly and pretentious.

If something has anything to do with the price of cheese in Albania, I give it the big mouldy seal of approval.

I think every politician should be a patriot and wear his people's national costume. Russia's Putin should wear those traditional wide embroidered shirts and pants held by a kushak belt, like the Russian peasants of old. Topped with Ivan the Terrible's crown, hehehe. British prime minister would wear a an English gentleman's suit with a Scottish quilt, topped with the wide-sided hat from the 19 century colonial British officer's uniform. Bush could put on a cowboy outfit topped by an Indian chief's feather headwear. :D

Politicians are like celebrities, they're constantly in the public eye so they need to carefully maintain the right look. Only unlike celebrities, politicians didn't get famous because of their winning looks or sparkling personality, which means not many of them can pull off the celebrity trick of dressing to impress as many people as possible. Instead they have to settle for dressing to annoy as few people as possible, which means it's sensible suits all round :)

New Zealand had, until the latest election, a Rastafarian MP, with enormous dreadlocks. I think he did still wear a suit to Parliament though. It was his first suit and it was made of hemp. Most of the time he just wears old, ripped denim and that kind of thing, and he often travels by skateboard. A lot of people bitch about him but I think they just can't handle someone so different from the stereotypical politician. Personally I think we need more pot-smoking MPs!

If 1/4 of the bastards who voted for legalise canabis voted for green, he'd be in parlament, and they'd have a better chance of smoking legally...

Yeah, it's a pity about Nandor, they were so damn close to keeping him. I feel way better about Parliament knowing there are just a few MPs who aren't proper politicians.

the entire administration should dress like they were on the original battlestar gallactica. short capes fastened with a chain at the neck.

plus a codpiece.

even for the women.

now THAT sets the proper tone and image for this administration!

*Thinks about some of the female politicians naked*
No, I think I'll take a double load of mysticism with my sagging boobies, please.

And politicians? I think that they should start wearing cloaks. Hells, everyone needs to start wearing cloaks.
When people in a thousand years time have discovered how to turn themselves into robots (so that they don't need clothes anymore, with the exception of decoration) they will all look back and realize that cloaks were the penultimate (The Ultimate Creation is the Top Hat + Monocle combination, as any gentlement knows) human clothing creation. At that point, cloaks shall become mandatory and all will bow their heads in mourning at what humanity could have been, had they but realized the power of cloaks sooner.

Politicans have to look a certain way, there is a book coming out in the spring by Michael Anton (under the name Michael Antongiavanni) which has a chapter on the way various presidents have dressed. The book is half in satire, but it raises interesting points.

Also, as long as politicians go to ivy league schools, and especially as long as they come from new england, they will maintain the traditional style of american dress. (sack suits, flat front trousers, &c).

Additionally, there are several tailors who have serviced politicians for a long time, the most noteworthy of whom is Georges de Paris in DC, who has been unofficial tailor to presidents and senators for decades.

Oxxford clothes of chicago is another example, I believe they dressed bush jr for his inaguration.

if you want to read an excerpt from Michael's book, it can be found at:

British politicians are generally better dressed, especially the tories.

The best dressed public figure is probably HRH The Prince of Wales, though he isnt a politician.

Being a Texan, politicians should dress in:
Cowboy hat
Jeans
Western shirt
Belt with enormous buckle
Ostrich skin/leather boots

For more formal occasions, wear single color shirt with bola tie. :D

G HW Bush was born in massachusetts, GW Bush was born in New Haven Connecticut.

Vacations in Maine, GHB Being raised at Andover, both going to Yale, &c.

The fact that they moved to texas doesnt stop them from being New Englanders, especially GHW Bush, who, sartorially speaking, was the most hidebound traditional president in decades.

Kennedy was born in Massachusetts as well.
