This is my rifle.

There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend.
It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life.
My rifle, without me, is useless.
Without my rifle, I am useless.
I must fire my rifle true.
I must shoot straighter than my enemy,
who is trying to kill me.
I must shoot him before he shoots me.
I will.

My rifle and myself know that what counts in war,
is not the rounds of fire,
the noise of our burst,
nor the smoke we make.
We know it is the hits that count.
We will hit.

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life.
Thus, I will learn it as a brother.
I will learn its weaknesses,
its strengths,
its parts,
its accessories,
its sights and its barrel.
I will ever guard it against
the ravages of weather and damage.
I will keep my rifle clean and ready,
even as I am clean and ready.
We will become part of each other.
We will.

Before God I swear this creed.
My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country.
We are the masters of our enemy.
We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until there is no enemy,
but Peace.

If they're you're enemy, doesn't that make them bad by default? Certainly you wouldn't consider having an enemy as good, would you?

Well, to be pedantic, though H&K is a German company, it went bankrupt during the ACR program developing the G-11 and was purchased by Britsh interests. ;)

And what's so funny about Germany making the rifle?

no not necessarily, just it is a very simplistic view. especially with the implied goodness on the 'my country' part.

but then i'm tired so i might just be being cranky & picky for no real reason ;)

I agree that the "my country" doesn't always have to = good (though that's what I usually consider, it's some of the things that some people do that pisses me off more), but enemy to me just always = bad... I mean, it IS your enemy. ;)

Oopsie. Not quite yet. It was put on hold because the bids weren't competitive. And apparantly the military is rethinking the requirements for the whole program.

XM8 status update (September 2005): Following several complains about non-competitive procurement of the XM8 system from Heckler-Koch USA, US Army first opened the bidding for contract to other companies, and then, in the July 2005, suddenly suspended the entire OICW Increment 1 program to re-think the entire set of requirements for the possible replacement of current M16 rifles and M4 carbines. These requirements will be re-viewed as Joint Services effort. At the present time, it seems that development of HK XM8 is suspended; it may be resumed if XM8 suit the new US Joint Service Requirements for a new assault rifle system; or, it may not. We will watch this process closely and update this article when new information will be available.
http://world.guns.ru/assault/as61-e.htm

Other sources seem to confirm this:

In budget documents released at the beginning of this year, the army set aside US$32.5 million to buy 10,400 XM8 carbines in Fiscal Year 2006. That procurement is now on hold pending the competition.
http://www.janes.com/regional_news/americas/news/jdw/jdw050520_1_n.shtml

Personally, I don't like it. It's basically still an OICW component, and that whole program was bad. In addition, another 5.56 mm weapon (which is what's being planned as far as I know) is the wrong way to go. Now if they go with the 6.8 SPC like some sources (http://www.strategypage.com/gallery/articles/688cartridge.asp) have hinted at being a possibility, it's a whole nother ballgame.

LOL! This wouldn't be the first time the US Army has screwed H&K on R&D :P

Don't blame H&K for the whole OCIW fiaso. Alliant Tech System built the 20mm grenade launcher, there was nothing wrong with the 5.56mm rifle. It's a solid rifle technology, and I'm glad the US is wising up and going German instead of rehashing the AR systems.

Skyfork, are you having trouble with quotes tonight? ;)

I'm not blaiming any companies at all. The problems almost entierly lie (sometimes literally *lie*) within the funny shapped building in Arlington...

The 5.56 mm does have a weight advantage, and carrying more ammunition was advantagious when the US relied on conscription and couldn't afford to train up the combat forces to the standards they are trained up to today. But now, with the more effectively trained forces, I think it's time to move back to a heavier bullet. 6.8 mm or 6.5mm would make a nice medium between the light 5.56 and the heavy 7.62.

The 6.5 would be nice, but a return to 7.62x51mm would suit me just fine. I fired the M14 in the service, and that is one great rifle!

Never fired the M14, but I have fired the M-1 - she kicks like a right proper SOB, even tucked in! (I'll take a 12 G over her anyday.) But the 7.62 N sure does make a nice big purty hole way the heck out yonder. :)
