Strange thing happened last night...

Now, I'm usually a pretty deep sleeper. I sleped through an earthquake once, so when I woke up last night at about 5:00 AM, I was curious.

Then, I felt the unnatural searing pain in my right leg.

This was a very painful pain. Possibly the worst pain I have felt in my young life (and I've broken several bones). I worked my hand down to my calf through the pain, and there was a HUGE lump in there.

I have had cramps before, but this was the first one that occured during sleep, and by far the most painful.

After the thing passed, I was them faced with the painful process of streaching out the abused muscles. Very annoying.

I'd just thought I'd share this with you. :fluffle:

I've had those before. They come out of nowhere, it seems. My advice would be to take more potassium to avert muscle cramps.

You have a bloodclot. Amputate the affected leg before it can spread to your brain/lungs and kill you/turn you into a vegetable.

if so, I got news for you... It's never going away. just when you forget about it... Ping! it's back.

I found a way to trigger it on purpose (great for going home early from work.) it has to do with tensing and streatching those leg muscles in just the right way.

You’re either about to have one hell of a growth spurt, or you're dieing.

I've had something like that, except that it was at the top of my calf, almost at my knee, and that the lump wasn't quite as large. As far as I can tell, its just from having your muscles too tight as you sleep. Haven't really gone to a doctor about it or anything, but it does happen about once a month for both legs for me, sometimes more.

I've had that happen to me before, calf muscle cramp in the middle of the night. It happened a couple of nights a week for a month or so, then went away. Then the whole thing recurred once or twice over a year or two.

This was during my most active time in my university's Hiking and Mountaineering Club, when I was basically running 10km a day and doing 20km hikes with a heavy pack on no sleep at the weekends.

You have probably over-exerted yourself, and didn't release all the tension before going to sleep, or built it up again unnecessarily. One thing I found the hard way, push-ups before sleep are not a good idea. You do find yourself tensing those muscles too much, and I reckon that's what did it for me.

I hate charlie horses. The only time I had one, it hurt so bad I nearly puked, and when I got up to take some aspirin, my leg folded under me -- if I hadn't fallen back on the bed, I'd have killed myself.

Drink OJ before bed, or eat a banana -- and you might want to take a pain reliever for a day or two before going to bed.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. I have been known to wake up from a sound sleep - screaming - ripping off the covers in a mad grab for my toes so I can puuuulll on the toes & strech out the cramp.

It runs in the familly. It's a good idea to let your S.O. know, early in the relationship, this will happen sometimes. Better than giving the impression that there is a freaking snake in bed with you or something.

Fruits & Veggies. There does seem to be, for me, a correlation with that potassium thingie. That & generalized tension before sleep seems to cause it.

It still happens once in a blue moon even with precautions. Do give a bananna a try tho'.
