Well, actually, no. The series was good at first, but the novelty of his writing style wore off very quickly, and the plots can be summarised thus:

"Hey, we're in a new place!" :)

"Is that Count Olaf in another disguise?"

"Oh noes! It was Count Olaf, but no-one believes us!"

"Eek! A fiendish trap from which there is no escape!" :(

"Yay! Free again!"

The End :mp5:

I think the series has gotten better since the beginning. It started with silly plots, but got more interesting and convuletd with the introduction of VFD. I don't believe that the last few books fit in with your description. For example, Olaf does not wear a disguise in The Slippery Slope.

True, the plots did get more varied after the introduction of VFD, but by then I was so jaundiced against him (not to mention sick of his writing style) that I gave up on book 9.

And the movie sucked. Apart from Count Olaf.

I didn't see the movie. And book 9 was a lousy time to give up, because since then, the plot has gotten more exciting, and the mystery surrounding book the 12th is massive.
