What could Emperor Petresun have done in his youth to prevent the Cybrid Fire? Would he have to have kept it out of the hands of the North American Prefecture?

I wonder what he really expected when Prometheus was handed over to the NAP — before the Fire, it must have seemed inconceivable that such a calamity could be possible. If he knew how much danger the world was really in, I think he would probably have tried to destroy Prometheus and all the research material he could get his hands on

The only thing I can imagine that might prevent Emperor Petresun from having destroyed Prometheus is fear of retribution from the NAP, which wanted above all else to have results from the project in which it invested so heavily. Cowardice is tremendously difficult to ascribe to the savior of humanity, but perhaps in his youth Emperor Petresun believed it a worthwhile gamble to assume that the NAP could handle Prometheus, rather than receive a certain and severe punishment.

Or perhaps Emperor Petresun assumed that the NAP would be able to recreate Prometheus, either from original research data, or the knowledge of other men and women who worked on Prometheus. Knowing that whether he was alive or dead, Prometheus would wreak havoc, perhaps Emperor Petresun chose to preserve his life that he could become our savior. Thoughts? Or is this going to turn into a really long monologue just to punish you all?

Probably. But at least I know what you're talking about. :p

Those were cool games.

OK then. Petresun used the Cybrid threat as justification to keep his reign as emperor. If the threat was eliminated, he would no longer have a real reason to rule, and the attention of the people would be diverted back to the shortcomings of the neo-feudal society he had built around himself.

The existance of Prometheus benefited him by giving him legitimacy.

So you mean he allowed to Fire to occur so that he could take charge, saying "I told ya so?" Incredible! The audacity!

Sure, why not? He ended up living in luxury from it, and became your typical fascist dictator. Note that when the Cybrids are dormant for years, Mars declares independence. And note that when the Cybrid threat comes about, the Martians join forces with the Imperials to defeat them. While there is a threat there, his power remains unchallenged.

Emperor Petresun was afraid of death, right? Hm. That /would/ be one explanation for not destroying Prometheus. He would never have had access to the equipment that keep him alive for so many centuries if the Fire hadn't occurred. But to allow so many millions to die just to prevent his own death? I have a hard time believing this.

Entirely possible. He could be your typical egomaniac; he knew he could get power...and then he believed that the trade off was worth it for the world to have him as leader - an immortal leader no less. He perhaps thought he would win the war.

Don't forget, other people in real history have slaughtered millions for lesser causes than immortality.

What would you have done if you had created Prometheus, and the NAP was about to take IT away from you without knowing what IT could do?

I'd probably do quite a lot of kicking and screaming. Or find a way to destroy it.
