Blood types

I've always been curious to see how this balnces out, and the blood donation thread piqued my curiosity again. So what is you blood type? And has it affected your life any?

And if you don't know, may I suggest you go find out. It should be a relativley quick and inexpensive test. And it may be the difference between life or death should you ever be in a severe accident. If they have to do the tests it takes time, less if they can open up your wallet and have it right there, and even less if you are coherent enough to ask and know it. Seconds save lifes, and this can save a lot more than seconds.

I honestly don't know my type.

Neither do I, despite all my hospital appointments and blood tests.

O Positive.

I don't understand it but I have some RH factor that they seem to get excited about whenever I donate.....

0 anything gets them exicted. You can donate to 0+, A+, B+ or AB+

0- is the ultimate donor, can donate to anyone, but can only take donations from other 0-

Me, my husband and both our kids are O+. Lucky lucky lucky.... well except for my 2 year old needed blood once and my hubby and I have some weird thingy where our blood wouldn't work well with hers so he had to take it from my 4 year old and someone else in the family.

I have no clue what was wrong with ours.

If you were one of these people, it would be prudent to keep a couple of bags in the fridge, then. :p

I'm an O negative. Didn't really much care for blood drives and such until somebody reminded me that my type were "the ultimate donors". I go whenever I can now.

Universal donor. I kinda feel that it is my duty to donate regularly.

A-
Not a universal donor, but the Red Cross is always calling to tell me that their supply of A- is "critically low." I go when I can.

This is good timing - I just did about 6 experiments linked to blood on Monday, one of which was testing smaples with Anti-A, Anti-B and Anti-D (for the Rhesus surface protein). Turns out I'm A+, so I think I class as a fairly common group. A friend of mine in the class was AB+ - lucky bastard can have anyones blood  - but unfortunately for him, his parents are B+ and O-. There was a tense phonecall after that situation...

As an aside, I also found out I was slightly anaemic and had an incredibly low WBC count.

Dunno. My dad is B+ and my mum is A+.

So maybe I'm one of those lucky bastards that can take anyone's blood, i.e AB.

You could be either of those or potentially B- or 0- depending on the genes. RH positive is dominant so if both your parents have one + gene and one - gene there is the chance that you could end up -. And if there is an A or B gene it will be expressed, so if you are B something it is 0B for sure and if your parent is an 0B there is a chance you are 00.

O pos. I guess I can donate to 85% of the population (as said before + is dominant to -) Unfortunatly my tattoo is too new to donate. I've only donated once, but plan to as soon as I can again

O-. I'm also something called CMV-, which has to do with a certain antibody - apparantly 90% of adults in the US are CMV+. For whatever reason (I don't fully understand this), CMV- blood is ideal for transfusion into infants. The O-/CMV- combination makes me quite popular with my local Red Cross - they call to remind me whenever I'm eligible to donate.

It means you tested negtive for the CMV virus (Cytomegalovirus). CMV belongs to the same group as herpes, the virus remains pretty dormant in a persons body for their entire life. The reason your blood can be given to babies is because its CMV- and can be given to babies who are immunocompromised (also HIV/AIDs patients or patients with serious immunodeficient diseases). People whose blood tests positive for CMV can still donate, their white blood cells are just filtered so that their blood can be transfused. :)

That being said, I'm O-. But I'm also IDA (Iron Deficient Anemic) and I weigh less then is required to donate. I WOULD however donate if I could.

I'm AB neg, but I've never been called to donate. AlphaGeek is O neg and donated during 9/11, but I don't think it's occurred to him to donate lately. I should get on him about that.

I don't know if I'm eligible to donate or not...I have several health issues going on right now that could possibly compromise anyone who gets my blood.
