Wait, does that mean I'm your hero or you're your own hero? It's sort of ambiguous. :p

I'd hope for the latter, of course.

Politically? You can't go wrong with Karl in my eyes. Yeah, he was the influence for a lot of shit, and there's some big gaps in his basic philosophy, but how can you not admire someone who writes an article entitled something along the lines of "a furious attack on all of creation"?
From the more corporatist, union side of things, my childhood hero was Arthur Scargill, leader of the NUM in the '84 coal strike, cos the daddy was a miner, and he and my daddy and the union and my community stood shoulder to shoulder for an entire year against the forces of the state unleashed against us, unleashed to win a political war which they justified (wrongly) with economic reasoning that was proved fallacious. We lost, but that wasn't the point, the point was not letting them break us.
Tony Benn and Micheal Foot are examples of fine old lefties, as was Nye Bevan. Again, far more of the soft left corporate school than my politics, but good men struggling to do good who had the forces of reaction and the media lined against them.
Paul Foot, radical journalist, nephew of Micheal, who died not long back, and who represented all that was good and right about the left wing tradition in the UK. Responsible for the freedom of a massive number of victims of miscarriages of justice.
Mandela, Gandhi, King and X - nuff said.
On a more cultural level, Percy Bysshe Shelley and Byron - Byron for attitude, Shelley for poetry and ideals. Groucho Marx. Julian Cope. Grant Morrisson. Bill Hicks. Micheal Moorcock. Iain Banks. Hanif Kureishi. David Bowie. Stevie Wonder (pre 1980whatnot). Chuck D.

Those do for starters?

im not one to have heros but i have a great admiration for terry waite

he was the special envoy from the church of england who was negotiating the release of hostages in lebanon when he was taken captive himself. he endured 5 years of captivity much of it chained to a wall in solitary confinement

he put himself in harms way for people he didnt know and paid a very high price for it.

Aside from my Dad and Jesus (and even Jesus had his down moments), I don't know very many historical figures whom I would truly look up to in life. Maybe Alvin York or John McCain.

Mainly I look to literature for my heroes: Superman, Aragorn, and Atticus Finch.

Almost all of my heros are "little people." The man who sacrifices his own comforts so his children can go to college. The mother who refuses medical treatment until she has her baby. The young girl who outsmarts her attacker and escapes kidnapping. The soldier who sacrifices his own life for his brothers. Everyday heros are the best.

Well, I'll have to disagree a little bit. My heroes are really any who serve overseas for their beliefs, or emergency workers here at home. I don't worship them or obsess over them, but I look up to them hoping to be more like them.

Then there's my French teacher. She's my unofficial hero cuz she called our class a bunch of little commies for not knowing how to say United States of America in French. :p

Heros and Decriptions Why:
myself (duh)
Jesus Christ (our savior)
God (our great Lord)
Crispin Freeman (played my favorite character on the best show ever: Witch Hunter Robin)
my mother (been there for me for some bad times, and she's my mother)
my father (he may be a smoker and drinker divorced from my mother, but he's been through terrible times with his other ex-wife and her friends so many times, that I learned to stand up to my enemies and not assume the worst because he's in a hard time)
Franklin D. Roosevelt (best president ever!),
my best friend named Gordon (a goth who's been there for me, shared many laughs, some secrets, etc.)
Anthony Horowitz (best author ever!)
My aunt Reetika (she commited suicide, but she's a poet and inspired me to write for a living)
the person who is OutpostCommand (sorta my hero, but a really great friend and ally in NS)
My Chemical Romance (best band ever)
my 6th grade math teacher (so funny and really cool, another reason why math is my favorite subject, he makes it really fun)
family members including aunts, uncles, and grandparents (they haven't really inspired me much, but hey, they are great relatives with so MANY different hobbies for a living, like my aunt Monica, she travels all over the world)

To me, a "hero" is someone you admire + respect. Part of admiration is wanting to be like them, at least for the part you admire them for. Besides, what other people think is better, I usually disagree with. But hey, each to his own.

Why Malcolm X is a hero. He is the personification of everything that is truly great and aweful about America. He rose from the being a ward of the state to being a successful criminal based on his drive and intelligence and the limited opportunities afforded him. He was finally caught he remade himself into a better man while in jail he was reborn from Boston Red to Malcolm X and worked tirelessly for the empowerment of the Black man, he then when shown a better way again while on the haj he was reborn a second time remade again this time working for the betterment of just the "Natural Black Man" but for all mankind. Here was a man who reborn not once not even twice but 3 time each time become a greater person. He is a challenge to all men of every color to become better, to put aside old evil ways and embrace truth and tolerance. If he is not a hero then there no heros.

Machiavelli for creating the two greatest works on government in the history of humankind. "The Prince" and his republican effort "Discourses on Livy".

Chesty Puller, Carlos Hatchcock, Jean-Paul Jones, and John Glenn from a more martial standpoint. Speaking of martial how can I forget Bruce Lee and of course Wong Fei-Hung.

Very rare is the General who deserves be called a hero and far fewer politicians. Common soldiers are certainly put into heroic situations by Generals who had politicians in turn put them into their desperate situation.

I’m not big on hero worship of any kind, but there are some people who deserve respect:

Terry Fox, Superman, and Snoopy come to mind.

I admire Charles de Gaulle tremendously, and the reason is best summed up by someone else whose name I don't remember.

"France didn't contain Charles de Gaulle; de Gaulle contained France."

I think this is very true, and allowed him to give France back a measure of its pride after WW2. In my mind's eye, France was an inflated balloon before WW2, and then Nazi Germany deflated it. De Gaulle blew France back up and strived hard to make it a significant world power in the post-war era. While being American makes it hard for me to support some of de Gaulle's more audacious actions during a Cold War, I admire him because he wasn't afraid to do as much as he could to make France great again. :D
